Desert National Park (Jaisalmer)

Desert National Park, Rajasthan, India, is situated in the west Indian state of Rajasthan near the town of Jaisalmer. This is one of the largest national parks, covering an area of 3162 km². The Desert National Park is an excellent example of the ecosystem of the Thar Desert. Sand dunes form around 20% of the Park. The major landform consists of craggy rocks and compact salt lake bottoms, intermed Thar DNP The Desert National Park in Thar desert of Rajasthan has two thematic attractions. One, the enchanting sand dunes. Two, the desert wildlife. Plenty of the antelope family, not too many but visible-with-effort foxes, and the birds. The majestic of all being the Great Indian Bustard. My trip in Feb 2023 was for birding as I have had enough of the dunes previously. The Bustard was sighted and photographed first followed by some other birds on a two-day safari. Here’s a list of the birds captured on camera: The Great Indian Bustard, Yellow-eyed Pigeon, Cinereous Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Long-legged Buzzard, Tawny Eagle, Spiny-tailed Lizard (the docile vegetarian reptile), Crested Lark, Indian Courser, and Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse. A 3 hr safari in the DNP was the highlight of our trip to Jaisalmer. I recommend going early, to get past the checkpost at sunrise. In March, we saw many unusual birds: the critically endangered great indian bustard, cinereous and griffon vultures, eastern imperial eagle, trumpeter finch, the isabelline and desert wheatears, black-crowned spar...

Jaisalmer: Gib Breeding Centre In Sam Welcomes Four New Members

Jaisalmer: The Great Indian Bustard (GIB) Conservation Breeding Centre in Sam, Wildlife Institute of India (WII) centre in-charge and chief scientist Dr Suthirtho Dutta said, “For the first time in captivity, the GIB has bred naturally. Since 2019 till now, eggs were being collected from the wild in Sam Centre, Jaisalmer. The The GIB is a critically endangered species, with only 100-150 birds left in the wild. The largest population is found in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, in and around Desert National Park (NP and Pokhran. To conserve the species, the ministry of environment, forest and climate change, Rajasthan forest department, WII, and International Fund for Houbara Conservation have joined hands to implement a dedicated project, the Bustard Recovery Program, funded by National CAMPA Authority, which has been ongoing since 2016. The success of conservation breeding depends on securing adequate wild habitats, releasing surplus captive-bred birds in future, and their ability to get established in these habitats. The Great Indian Bustard Conservation Breeding Center in Sam, Jaisalmer, and the Bustard Recovery Program are playing a crucial role in preserving this majestic species for future generations. Hunting and habitat loss have contributed to the species' decline in the past, while power lines pose a significant threat in the present, as the birds have a poor frontal vision and collide with power lines when flying. Chief wildlife warden of Rajasthan, Arindam Tomar said,“It ...

A recent incident of alleged poaching of a Great Indian Bustard -- the State bird of Rajasthan listed in the “critically endangered” category -- near the famous Sam sand dunes in Jaisalmer district has shocked environmentalists who have blamed poor wildlife management and lack of protective measures for the crime. Some hunters travelling in two vehicles allegedly shot dead a Great Indian Bustard in broad daylight in Sudasari area forming part of the Desert National Park on December 20 and took away the dead bird. A shepherd saw the act and complained to the forest authorities. • 27/12/2012 • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
