OnePlus 10T review: Speed is the name of the game, but is it enough?

After putting its T-series smartphones off for a year -- in the US, at least -- OnePlus is back with the launch of the OnePlus 10T. The device marks the company's highly-demanded return to its roots of churning out snappy handsets with flagship specifications -- at a mid-range price of $649. For $100 more, you can double the 10T's RAM and internal storage, making the phone an attractive option for folks who demand more power. In fact, OnePlus says that if you make your purchase during select days in August, you get the upgraded model for the same $649 base price. More details on that towards the end. I've been using the OnePlus 10T for about 2 weeks and it's made me question whether it was worth spending $400 more for my iPhone 13 Pro Max. For a phone that starts at $649, there are some notable compromises that you should be aware of, especially when comparing the 10T to the company's flagship, the OnePlus 10 Pro. But the 10T is a serious competitor in the Qualcomm Snapdragon flagship processor market, and OnePlus believes that it's found the middle ground between power, speed, and value. Both phones are 6.7-inch handsets with essentially the same same shape and size, except the 10 Pro has curved display sides and the 10T has flat ones. Looking at the precise measurements, we can see the 10 Pro is slightly lighter than the 10T and a little skinnier across its width. Both phones feel comfortable to hold though, so don't let the small difference in inches and ounces influence your decision too much here. OnePlus 10T review: this is the OnePlus 10 you always wanted.

The OnePlus 10T is a worthy mid-range Android phone. Its good-looking screen, powerful chipset and fast charging make it a tempting buy for certain users. It’s not perfect – corners have clearly been cut in the camera, battery life and design departments to keep the price lower than it needs to be – but some users will find the lower price and different features make this a solid buy over the premium 10 Pro. Intriguingly, the OnePlus 10T actually beats out its 10 Pro sibling in two key areas. One is the processor, as the 10T has the ‘plus’ version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 that the Pro came along with. The other is the charging speed which, at 150W, is lightning fast… as long as you enable the mode in the settings menu and use the in-box charger. The OnePlus 10T's front-facing camera. (Image credit: Future) A great example of that is the cameras. The 10T has no zoom camera, and misses out on lots of the fun 10 Pro modes, making the photography experience worse than on the older, more expensive phone. The cameras actually match some much more affordable phones, so you shouldn’t buy this if you just want a cheap camera phone. The battery life is also middling, which is a shame. OnePlus has clearly prioritized charging speed over battery endurance, and you’ll be relying on that quick powering to see the device through a day of use. Some of these issues are easy to overlook given the price, but others – like the battery life – really aren’t. So while this is a decent Android p...
