‘Pathaan’ movie review: Shah Rukh Khan shines in this spectacle sans secrets

The story of a son of India who puts country before self, Pathaan is a crowd pleaser that marks the return of Shah Rukh Khan to the action genre with new toys and a lot more bombast. Returning after a hiatus, SRK is in form in the larger-than-life space of Yash Raj banner’s growing spy universe where writers pick strands from the real world and propel them at escape velocity. Here, director Siddharth Anand draws from current affairs like the abrogation of Article 370, Pakistan’s fascination for Kashmir, bio-warfare and mysterious viral attacks to conjure up a spectacle sans secrets that is safe for the thin-skinned and provides fans of Hollywood spy agents some smart desi stuff to cheer about. Moving at a breakneck speed in locations across the world, itis about an aging Indian secret agent (Shah Rukh) who puts together a team of retired agents to navigate where the red tape doesn’t stick. Their fight is against an insider called Jim (John Abraham) who has turned rogue and is out to finish India in collusion with a Pakistani general. Along the way, Pathaan comes across an ISI agent Rubina (Deepika Padukone) whose fashion sense is obvious, but her designs are ambiguous. Writers Sridhar Raghavan and Abbas Tyrewala (dialogues) segue Shah Rukh’s genetic material with the screenplay to create some whistle-inducing dialogues on Pathaan’s commitment, courage and camaraderie. With Shah Rukh, it is not just about brawn as he brings his trademark wit, irreverence and self-deprecator...

Pathaan Movie Review: It takes a Shah Rukh Khan to save Bollywood, India

Like any spy thriller minted at Yash Raj Films' studios, Pathaan is slick, stylish, clean. Sprinkled with a generous dose of Bollywood masala that YRF grows in its backyard, Pathaan perfectly caters to a section of paisa-wasool entertainer-wanting cine-goers. But, what about the Shah Rukh Khan fans, who aren't used to seeing their God of Love bleeding from the mouth? In fact, never in my tricenarian life have I ever witnessed Shah Rukh Khan whack so many people - enemy bones popping, jaws breaking, skulls cracking, blood splattering. What about them? For them, Pathaan comes with a distinct Shah Rukh Khan tadka too. He is the King Of Romance, after all. So, there have to be epic pickup lines, flirty innuendos that make your cheeks red, and that intoxicating, hypnotising gaze - the Shah Rukh Khan stare - that honestly makes you go 'okay, that's 1400 bucks well spent'. The menacing John as Jim is not your average Joe. This ex-RAW agent carries a medal India awarded him posthumously close to his chest as a reminder that his country did not stand by him when he needed it the most. So Jim harbours angst, and it was as if John, the actor's characteristic plank-like expressions were a perfect fit for the character. And then he added what he does best - flexing his sleuth muscles making the veins in his arms pop, which in turn, makes you fear Pathaan's nemesis. Deepika Padukone's ISI agent had more meat than say, Katrina Kaif's Zoya from the Tiger series, also an ISI agent. Also, t...

Taking to Twitter a while ago, KRK shared his thoughts on Shah Rukh Khan-led Pathaan. The self-proclaimed critic – after watching the first half of the Siddharth Anand tweeted, “It’s interval and till here #Pathaan @iamsrk is on fire. It’s brilliant and full of entertainment. 4* for first half.” However, his views about the film changed as the film finally ended. It’s interval and till here — KRK (@kamaalrkhan) Taking to the micro-blogging platform as soon as the film wrapped, KRK tweeted, “There are 2 different films in #Pathaan! One is the first half and 2nd is 2nd half. First film is good but 2nd film is not so good. Actually it’s a big-scale film with big star cast and 0% story. But If #KGF2 and #Pushpa can work then it should also work. So 2.5* from me.” I...

Pathaan movie review, Pathan review: Shah Rukh Khan is back

• Also read in: • Pathaan movie review: Shah Rukh Khan, and Bollywood, are back with this patriotic spy thriller Pathaan movie review: Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone-starrer has finally got what’s needed in a spy thriller -- non-stop action, glamorous leads, the guy who can save the world, a high-octane set piece, and an emo line at a time. First things first, Bollywood is back. Shah Rukh Khanis back. Hindi movies have been constructing the ‘desi’ equivalents of the Bond-Bourne franchise for a while now. Tiger has been ‘zinda’ in a pacy double-bill, Agent Vinod has done his bit, BellBottom has flexed and flared, but it is ‘Pathaan’ which has got the spy movie-laced-with-heavy-doses-of-patriotism bouncing off the screen, with Shah Rukh Khan acing the action avatar, flaunting the floppy-hair-glinting-aviators-eight packs (or is it twelve?) look. That’s because it has finally cracked the requirements of an action movie — non-stop action, leavened by glamorous leads, topped by the guy who can save the world, a high-octane set piece and an emo line at a time. The plot involves a slew of spies, sardonic RAW chiefs (Ashutosh Rana), evil ISI generals and gun-toting terrorists inhabiting global hotspots. Pakistan is back eyeing Kashmir (it will never learn, will it). One of India’s own, Jim (John Abraham) has gone rogue. Gorgeous ISI agent Rubina (Deepika Padukone) is as at home in a bikini as she is in skin-tight spandex. A deadly virus, much more dangerous than Covid 19, is ...

Pathaan Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan Gifts Every Second Of 4 Saal, 1 Mahina Aur 4 Din Back To His Fans In The Most Entertaining Way He Could!

Pathaan Movie Review Rating: Star Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Dimple Kapadia, Ashutosh Rana Director: Siddharth Anand Pathaan Movie Review Out! (Photo Credit –Poster From Pathaan) What’s Good: Shah Rukh Khan proving how a wounded lion is more dangerous than a hungry one, he runs after his prey not to satisfy his hunger but gratify his anger What’s Bad: The cinematography in moving action sequences goes for a toss, Satchith Paulose’s (whose other notable work apart from this is Divine’s track One Side) camera starts to rely heavily on below-the-par VFX hampering the watching experience Loo Break: Nope, you might either miss a cool moment by Shah Rukh Khan or some already-heard dialogue Watch or Not?: Watch it on the big screen, if you’re. If you didn’t like War, probably even this won’t satisfy your quench as well Language: Hindi Available On: Theatrical Release Runtime: 146 Minutes User Rating: Following the routine ‘spy thriller’ template, we have the good guy in India’s best soldier/spy Pathaan (Shah Rukh Khan), we have a bad guy in Jim (John Abraham), we’ve “I could either seduce you to no limits to fall in love with me or kill you” kinda leading lady in Rubai (Deepika Padukone). Why Jim is the bad guy and Pathaan is the good guy is explained through some weak subplots. But the director forgets to focus on why Rubai is what she is. Jim is creating a ‘Raktbeej’, a virus that could blow up an entire city and we all know in what country that would...

Pathaan Movie Review Quicker: 'Last Of The Stars' Shah Rukh Khan Brings Back The 'Mass' To The Massala Entertainers, Deepika Padukone Could Burn Your Screen!

Pathaan Movie Review Quicker(Photo Credit –Poster From Pathaan) Pathaan day is finally here and as much as we hate typing in the interval, we really want you to know how our experience has been till now without giving a single spoiler. So, Shah Rukh Khan fans and general audience alike, here’s how it has been till now. Without revealing anything about the story, let’s just say Shah Rukh Khan is the most charismatic 57-year-old you’ll ever see on screen. His mere presence gets you intrigued in every scene he is in. The action choreography for the film excels as the man-to-man combat sequences look astonishingly amazing but the moving ‘grand’ scenes lack the finesse the VFX should have. The green screen usage is clearly visible if you really look into it. The scale speaks lavishness and the pre-interval block is good. Certain ‘ Pathaan is directed by Siddharth Anand. The film marks the comeback of SRK after the Zero debacle. The advance booking trends are quite strong and the film is set to make and earth-shattering opening!
