If you are a taxpayer, you would have come across the term ‘TDS’. In this article, we will see what TDS is, why it exists, who should pay it, who should deduct it, its types and so on. What Is TDS- Its Meaning & Full Form Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is a tax collection system in which tax is deducted at the source of income. The payer deducts a certain percentage from the due amount as tax and remits it to the government on the due date. For example, when you receive your salary, your employer deducts the TDS and deposits the remaining amount in your bank account. As per Section 192 of the Income Tax Act, your employer is required to deduct TDS from your salary before making a payment. In the same way, TDS applies to various transactions such as salary, brokerage, commission, rent payment, professional fees, etc. There is no single rate of TDS for each transaction; it varies as per the nature of the transactions. In this case, as the rent amount is more than Rs.50,000, the company has to deduct 10% as TDS before making the payment. Thus, after the TDS deduction, the company will pay Rs. 54,000 (Rs. 60,000 – (Rs. 60,000 x 10%)) to the property owner. Example 2: Let’s assume ABC Pvt. Ltd. has to pay Rs. 1,00,000 to RTC Pvt. Ltd. for their professional services. In this case, payments made to professionals are subject to a TDS deduction of 10%. Hence, ABC Pvt. Ltd. will deduct TDS o...
