Why 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' Has Captured the Popular Imagination

The Bharat Jodo Yatra (BJY) from Kanyakumari to Kashmir is a remarkable attempt to reimagine India’s politics through sustained public action. The Congress party has finally put its feet on the ground. It has mounted an ambitious mass contact programme reminiscent of Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March in 1930 – a direct action campaign of tax resistance and nonviolent protests – which ultimately led to the call for civil disobedience to challenge colonial rule. The BJY reminds us of some of those iconic campaigns. The BJY is not just a routine padayatra. It is set against a political context dominated by sharp divisions, Also read: An important wedge in a hyper-nationalist narrative Against this backdrop, the BJY has raised three big issues – economic inequality, social polarisation, and authoritarian politics. These issues have been raised every day during Rahul Gandhi’s interactions while walking, in his press conferences, in meetings with special collectives of people, in speeches, and in rallies. All these events and issues are connected in one respect – in their bid to uphold fraternity and unite a divided country and economy, where unemployment and inflation are high, even as the government has been high on promises and low on delivery. This has generated a substantive critique of the governance record of the regime and its economic, social, and political policies. At the same time, it has refurbished the Congress’s credentials as a party of national unity and social cohes...

American Truck Yatra: Rahul undertakes another ride, this time from Washington to New York in US

During his most recent trip to the United States, Gandhi took a ride in a truck from Delhi to Chandigarh to learn about the challenges faced by truck drivers. According to a release issued by the party, the Congress leader continued his journey to listen to people in India and abroad by going on a 190-kilometer "American Truck Yatra" from Washington, DC, to New York with driver Taljinder Singh Vicky Gill and his companion Ranjeet Singh Banipal. The journey ended with a delicious breakfast at a restaurant. According to the release, the highlight of the trip was a candid conversation about the day-to-day lives of Indian-origin truck drivers in the United States, similar to his truck ride from Delhi to Chandigarh. During the ride, Gandhi mentioned that trucks in the United States are designed with the comfort and safety of the driver in mind, whereas this is not the case in India. It was featured during the ride that while transporters here at the home battle to earn barely enough to get by with small wages and a record cost rise, their American partners get pride for their work with good wages. During his discussion with Gill about the rising costs of commodities, inflation and politics in India, Gandhi noticed that no religion helps one to spread hate. Along the way, they also listened to songs by Sidhu Moosewala. "There are a lot of lessons we can draw from the American truck industry to plan a new vision for the truck industry here in India. Indian truck drivers are the l...

From ‘pappu’ to popular: Can the Bharat Jodo Yatra remake Rahul Gandhi's image?

Welcome to The India Fix by Shoaib Daniyal, a newsletter on Indian politics. This week we have a special edition for our readers, as I come back after walking with Rahul Gandhi’s Kanyakumari-to-Kashmir Bharat Jodo Yatra in Karnataka. If you’re new here and would like this sort of deep dive into Indian politics in y our inbox every Monday, [email protected]. One of the top comments on an October 1 YouTube video of a Rahul Gandhi speech during the Bharat Jodo Yatra is a rather blunt appraisal of the Congress leader. “Rahul Gandhi’s popularity has grown rapidly,” writes Satya Sarthak Manohari. “A tough journey from pappu to popularity.” The Congress might wince at the use of “pappu” – Hindi slang for simpleton, weaponised by the Bharatiya Janata Party against Rahul Gandhi. But in essence, the Congress would be quite chuffed with Manohari’s review. This is exactly what the Bharat Jodo Yatra aims to achieve: by bypassing the media and directly hitting the streets, Gandhi hopes to reinvent his image in the run up to the 2024 elections. While it is still early days – 80% of the march is left – there are indications that it is working. Poor PR There is little doubt that Rahul Gandhi has a perception problem. Part of this is of his own making, given his poor skills when speaking to the media. In the run up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, for example, Gandhi gave a disastrous television interview to Arnab Goswami that, in the words of former Congressman Another part of it has a...

India: Five things Rahul Gandhi got right in Bharat Jodo Yatra

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with his sister and party's general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during the Bharat Jodo Yatra, in Srinagar on January 29, 2023. Party leaders KC Venugopal and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury are also seen. “The Yatra has helped the Congress party consolidate its core voters, which is important because the party risked losing even its base.” Image Credit: ANI It’s a question not very difficult to answer by now: the Yatra has helped the Congress party consolidate its core voters, which is important because the party risked losing even its base. At the same time, the Yatra has failed to convert any swing voters from BJP to Congress. Even the Congress party’s supporters who appreciate the Yatra admit it’s not enough for the party to overturn its electoral decline. Before the 2019 general elections, Rahul Gandhi said in an interview that he had attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strongest asset, his image, with an anti-corruption ‘Rafale’ campaign. That bombed at the hustings. After losing the election badly, Rahul Gandhi resigned as party president and went into a prolonged sulk, disappearing from the public eye for long periods. Until now, it was often difficult to understand what Rahul Gandhi was up to. He would disappear into Europe for a vacation on the eve of important state elections, only to return a few days before polling to wave in rallies. Voters like to see politicians work hard. The only way to shed the ‘entitled dynast’ tag is to work ...

Karnataka Assembly Election Results 2023: How Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra helped Congress win

Walk to Victory: How Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra paved way for Congress win in Karnataka In the fiercely fought Karnataka Assembly election, Congress won 136 of the 224 seats. The party attributes the victory to its staunch opposition to the BJP's 'divisive politics', its leader Rahul Gandhi, and his Bharat Jodo Yatra. The influence of the march is quite visible in the southern state As the vote-counting process progressed on 13 May, the Congress seemed poised to win the fiercely fought Karnataka assembly election with at least 136 of the 224 constituencies. The party attributes the stunning victory to the state’s alleged corruption, opposition to the BJP’s “divisive politics,” its leader Rahul Gandhi, and especially to his The grand old party released a 49-second video clip from the yatra as soon as counting for the Karnataka election began at 8 am on Saturday. They wrote, “I’m invincible. I’m so confident, Yeah, I’m unstoppable today.” The 145-day yatra, led by now-disqualified MP Rahul Gandhi, travelling a distance of about 4,000 kilometres from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu to Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, arrived in election-bound Karnataka on 30 September 2022. Rahul Gandhi, a former president of the Congress, had many opportunities to interact with villagers during the yatra. He considered this march to be one of his “most beautiful and profound experiences.” The yatra travelled through 75 districts in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pra...

How Rahul Gandhi turned the corner with Bharat Jodo Yatra

That is where the Congress is still weak. In the midst of the yatra, the party gave up on the Gujarat campaign with Rahul Gandhi only going there for one day. The result was the party’s worst ever performance in the state. The silver lining for the Congress was the win in Himachal. But the party needs to do well electorally in order to implement any of the changes it seeks. This could cost them the state. Karnataka has elections coming up in May where again the party is facing internal rumblings between the opposing camps of former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar. In Kerala, Shashi Tharoor has been locked in a battle with local leaders for months now; while several other senior leaders remain disgruntled.
