So, will Akshay Kumar manage to bounce back with Raksha Bandhan? Well, the box office along will decide that, but for now, his movie with Bhumi Pednekar, directed by Aanand L Rai, at least has the kind of content at first glance to potentially strike chord with the audience, more so since the theme of sibling bond should resonate heavily given its time of release. Bollywood News: Raksha Bandhan Movie Review; If the box office success of the movie “Raksha Bandhan” indicates that cinema, particularly Hindi cinema, can still be fueled by sensations, feelings, and relationships, it may be good news for Hindi film. Hindi film directors who are keen to mimic South Indian cinema need comparable tales that may captivate viewers in Hindi-speaking states. The audience in this area does not like the gimmicks. They recognise the imitation right away, yet they can’t help but scream, sob, laugh aloud, and shudder throughout the movie due to the terror of the unknown. In this regard, the movie Raksha Bandhan Movie appears to be a breath of fresh air in between the stories of weary and defenceless feet. Raksha Bandhan Movie Review And Rating {2/5}: Akshay Kumar

Story Set in the locales of Chandni Chowk, Raksha Bandhan opens with Lala Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar) who owns a ' pushtaini' chat shop. There's a word in the town that pregnant ladies who gulp gol gappas at his eatery are blessed with a male child. On the other hand, Kedarnath is a brother to four unmarried sisters, each of them facing prejudices for different reasons. While Gayatri (Sadia Khateeb) is the sarvgun sampanna one of the lot, Durga (Deepika Khanna) faces body shaming for being on the chubbier side. Laxmi (Smrithi Srikanth) is constantly reminded of her dusky complexion and the tomboyish Saraswati (Sahejmeen Kaur) is told that she has been fed on too much of 'Ghayal and Ghatak'. Meanwhile, Kedarnath's ' bachpan ka pyaar' Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) is eager to get hitched to him. But the latter refuses to oblige because of his promise to his mother on her deathbed that he would tie the knot only after he has fulfilled his responsibility of marrying off his sisters. After a lot of hassles, Kedarnath finally gets one of his sisters Gayatri hitched. Will the rest three also find their respective life partners? Will Kedarnath and Sapna's love story get a happy ending? The rest of the film holds the answers to these questions. Direction Director Aanand L Rai is known for capturing the small town milieu in an engaging way on screen. The female characters in his movies are generally etched strong and have a choice and a power to reject. However, Raksha Bandhan seems to be an ...

Raksha Bandhan movie review: Akshay Kumar’s performance is the heart of this emotional family drama

Where to watch: Theatres Rating: 3 stars Raksha Bandhan movie review After making a special appearance in Aanand L. Rai's last directorial Atrangi Re, Akshay Kumar reunites with the filmmaker as he single-handedly leads the emotional family drama Raksha Bandhan released on, well, Raksha Bandhan. Akshay's heartfelt and earnest performance is the biggest strength of the film which tackles the issue of dowry in Indian society. Set in Chandni Chowk in the national capital, Lala Kedarnath (Akshay) is the owner of a chaat bhandaar famous among the pregnant women who believe eating golgappas from his shop would bless them with a baby boy. On the other hand, Lala has four sisters namely Gayatri (Sadia Khateeb), Durga (Deepika Khanna), Laxmi (Smrithi Srikanth), and Saraswati (Sahejmeen Kaur) whom he must get married before he gets into his own mandap as per the promise he made to his mother on her deathbed. Among these four sisters, Gayatri is the most 'ideal' bride, while Durga is overweight, Laxmi is dark-skinned, and Saraswati is a tomboy who loves Sunny Deol films. Lala's pledge to get his sisters married has a roadblock - his own childhood sweetheart Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) who keeps pestering him for marriage. When Sapna's father gives an ultimatum of eight months to Lala that he would get his daughter married off to anyone else before he gets retired in due time, the film's humourous tone gets serious. As Lala finds himself fixated on how to get his sisters married before Sap...

Raksha Bandhan Review: This regressive Akshay Kumar starrer leaves you fuming and frustrated

I don’t know where to start and what to start. In the first five minutes of the film, I saw casual sexism, body shaming, racism and of course glorifying dowry. Now, I hope you got an idea of why am I saying that from where to start. Akshay Kumar starrer has so many flaws that at some point, it irked me. I wish we could have seen more brother-sister bonds but I came across cringe. It seems like Raksha Bandhan is less about the sister-brother bond and more about glorifying patriarchy. [Advertisement] In the movie, Akshay is seen working hard to collect money not just for the wedding but for the dowry as well. Considering that dowry has been an issue in this country, in one scene, we get to see Akshay defending the practice of dowry. Yes, in the second half, he does oppose it but only after facing a tragic incident. Instead of asking his sisters if they want to get married, he pushes them to be the ‘Susheel, sundar’ ladkiyaa so that he can marry them off. He asks his dusky skin complexion sister to ‘marinate’ herself in ubtan, he asks his healthy sister to reduce weight and stop eating, and he asks his tomboy sister to look more like ‘Sunny Leone’ instead of ‘Sunny Deol’. I mean why? Yes, I agree that every brother mocks their sister and makes fun of them whether for their colour, size or nature but demeaning them in front of 100 people is not what we want in a brother. Despite the girls telling him that they are comfortable in their own skin, their brother is definitely not ...
