Raju, after an evaluation meeting of the AI cameras installed across the state as part of the 'Safe Kerala' project, addressed the press here on Friday and said 3,52,730 violations were detected by the cameras from June 5 to 8. He said Keltron, which verifies the detections, uploaded 19,790 cases on the integrated transport monitoring system and the Motor Vehicles Department has issued challans in 10,457 violations. Road accidents claimed 16K lives in Kerala since 2018

By Express News Service THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: More than 16,000 lives have been lost on the roads in Kerala from 2018 to April 2022. During this period, more than 1.5 lakh road accidents took place in which 1.78 lakh people sustained injuries, the official data with the Kerala Police has revealed. As per the data, 2018 was the deadliest year as 4,303 people were killed, while 2020 saw a dip in casualties as 2,979 people got killed. Till April this year, 14,614 accidents were recorded in which 1,441 people lost their lives. The most number of accident deaths in 2021 occurred between 6pm and 9pm. As many as 777 people lost their lives during this time window and the most number of casualties was reported from rural areas (2,521). Contrary to the popular perception that accidents mostly occur around midnight, the 2021 data revealed that the number of accidents and resultant fatalities were in fact less during this time. From midnight to 3am, only 166 deaths were reported in the state, which is the lowest for any given time window spanning three hours. In the same period, 2,611 people lost their lives due to the fault of the drivers of the vehicles, while poor lighting and stray animals claimed 14 and 39 lives, respectively. The most number of accident deaths in 2021 occurred in January (407), while May recorded the least (123). But since the AI cameras came up, the number has dropped to 5-8,” Minister Raju said on Friday. Pathanamthitta: Eight persons died in different road accidents in Kerala on the first day of the New Year. At Thalavadi in Alappuzha, two young men were killed when a police jeep hit their bike. Three persons lost their lives in two road accidents that occurred at Thiruvalla and Enathu in nearby Pathanamthitta district. In north Kerala, a bike rider met with his end after colliding with a car at Kakkodi in Kozhikode district, while a woman pedestrian was killed when a bus hit her at Koyilandy. The police said the accident may have happened after the driver dozed off. The jeep went out of control and came to a stop after crashing into the boundary wall of a house nearby. Ernakulam accounts for 15% of road accidents in Kerala

By Express News Service KOCHI: Ernakulam district accounts for nearly 15% of all accidents in the state while Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur are second and third, according to a report released by the Kerala Road Safety Authority (KRSA).“The average accident rate in a year in the state was 34,095, of which 5,038 occurred in Ernakulam district alone,” said KRSA Executive Director T Elangovan while releasing the report at Accident-Free Cochin, a workshop organised by the GCDA along with NATPAC. Around 37% crashes in Ernakulam district occurred within Ernakulam City Police limit, which consists of Ernakulam Town South, Ernakulam Town North, Palluruthy, Infopark, Ernakulam Central, Kalamassery, Fort Kochi, Hill Palace and Mattanchery circles. In 2021, 1,780 accidents had occurred within Ernakulam city, causing 141 fatalities and 1,758 injuries. Around 23% of the victims in road crashes within the city were either non-motorised vehicle users or cyclists. Among vehicles, 61% were two-wheelers, followed by car/jeep (21%), three-wheelers (5%), buses (4%) and lorries/trucks (3%).
