External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar delivers the Fourth Ramnath Goenka Memorial Lecture in New Delhi on Thursday, November 14. His definition of that state of mind was doing the same thing over and over again – and expecting different results. A corollary of that is to do the same thing in different situations – and then expect the same results. This is important to recognise at a moment in world politics when many of our long-held assumptions no longer hold true. If the world is different, we need to think, talk and engage accordingly. Falling back on the past is unlikely to help with the future. The world is ...

Why did Jaishankar’s speech suddenly become popular in China?

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar speaks on stage during the 58th Munich Security Conference (MSC) in Munich, southern Germany on Saturday. Photo: AFP While speaking on June 3 at the Globsec 2022 Forum in Bratislava, Slovakia, India's External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar came down heavily on Europe—not only did he refute the criticism against India's purchase of Russian oil, but also insisted that India could well manage its foreign policy on its own, refusing to act according to any pressures imposed on it. Jaishankar argued that the world cannot be as "Euro-centric" as it was in the past. Soon, his tough albeit witty words generated a significant fan following even among Chinese netizens and media. And here is why: Jaishankar was indignant for a good reason. The session was themed "Taking Friendship to the Next Level: Allies in the Indo-Pacific Region," but it ironically spent all 28 minutes talking down to and criticizing India. The interviewer acted in a condescending manner, and sought to push around India on issues concerning Russia and China, than valuing India on its own merits. The interviewer first grilled Jaishankar on India's increased oil imports from Russia. The latter fought back saying that if Europe could buy Russian oil so could India, alluding to West's hypocrisy. When India was told off for its moral ambiguity, Jaishankar fought back with down-to-earth pragmatism. He rightfully turned an India-versus-Europe argument into a classic No...

Jaishankar fires fresh salvo on Rahul Gandhi's US remarks, says 'he speaks a lot without...'

By India Today World Desk: Days after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed the ruling BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi by calling him a "specimen" in the US, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar fired a fresh salvo at the Gandhi scion. Jaishankar said Rahul Gandhi speaks a lot without having a proper understanding of the facts and has a habit of criticising India abroad. "He has a habit of criticising India abroad and it is not in the interest of the country to take its internal matters to the outside world. "Sometimes Rahul Gandhi talks about the Chinese bridge on Pyongang lake. He should understand that China took over that particular area in 1965," EAM Jaishankar said. Referring to Gandhi's recent remarks made at an event in the US, the minister said, "The world is watching us". Rahul Gandhi had also said the Congress did not blame the British for the train accidents that took place during its rule but the minister took the responsibility. ALSO READ | Jaishankar also hit out at the Congress and said, "Congress always talks about modern villages constructed by China near the Arunchal border. Then Congress should also tell us that the area where modern villages are being constructed by China has been under them since 1959." The Congress has time and again accused the BJP-led union government of not making any progress towards restoring the status quo ante on the borders. Ties between the two countries nosedived significantly following the fierce clash in Galwan Vall...
