Starring Akshay Kumar and Emraan Hashmi in the leading roles, the action-drama film Selfiee was released in the theatres on February 24, 2023. The film, in which Nushrratt Bharuccha and Diana Penty are paired opposite Emraan and Akshay's characters, was a commercial failure and ended up collecting only Rs 17.03 crore net at the domestic box office, as per the entertainment tracking website Sacnilk.com. Close to two months after its release, Selfiee has started streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from Friday, April 21. The OTT giant took to its social media handles and made the announcement with the caption, "You don’t want to miss this face-off between a Superstar and a Super Fan. Who will you side with? #Selfiee is Now Streaming." It is an official Hindi remake of the Malayalam comedy-drama Driving Licence, in which Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu play the superstar Hareendran and the Motor Vehicle Inspector Kuruvila Joseph, respectively. The original is streaming on Prime Video with Hindi subtitles. Prithviraj Sukumaran has also co-produced the Hindi remake under his banner Prithviraj Productions, along with Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, Akshay Kumar's Cape of Good Films, Star Studios, and Listin Stephen's Magic Frames, which also bankrolled the 2019 original film. Selfiee is directed by Raj Mehta, who has previously helmed Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kiara Advani, and Diljit Dosanjh's comedy-drama Good Newwz in 2019, and Varun Dhawan, Kiara Advani, Anil ...

(Photo by Sujit JAISWAL / AFP) (Photo by SUJIT JAISWAL/AFP via Getty Images) AFP via Getty Images Indian star Selfiee took a slow start on Friday and earned mere $0.307 million on the first day of the release in the country. The collections are way below trade expectations - most experts had expressed hopes that the film may open anything between $0.5 million and $0.84 million in India and the Selfiee could even touch the lower level of the expected range. Directed by Raj Mehta, Selfiee is an official Hindi remake of the 2019 Malayalam film Driving License. Kumar steps into the shows of Prithviraj Sukumaran from the original while Emraan Hashmi essays the role originally played by Suraj Venjaramoodu. Kumar essays the role of a huge film star while Hashmi is one of his biggest fan who happens to be the officer who needs to oversee the procedure for the star to secure a driver’s license. Editor Selfiee is the second film in recent times that is a remake of a south-Indian film and has failed to attract audiences. The previous one was Kartik Aaryan’s Shehzada that hit theatres last week and has proved to be a box office dud. Producer and film business expert Girish Johar says, “Remake cannot be a factor for the audience to buy a ticket. You fan buy a ticket if you like the trailer, or love the stars. A remake does not decide that audie...

Selfiee review: Akshay Kumar gets up, close and personal with his superstardom

Not very long ago we saw Ayushmann Khurrana play a superstar in Selfiee movie review: Akshay Kumar in a still from the film. An official remake of Malayalam film Driving Licence, this Akshay-starrer dramedy is not a frame by frame copy of the original (I've seen the Malayalam one in bit and parts) and has many lighter moments. Other than the basic storyline, Selfiee has ditched the serious undertones of the original and laced the writing with a lot of humour. The story follows superstar Vijay Kumar (Akshay) who wants a driving licence urgently to be able to finish the climax of his film and save the producer from incurring losses. His diehard fan, RTO officer Om Prakash Aggarwal (Emraan Hashmi) is given the task to help the actor, and he agrees to fulfil it without following the usual tedious process and asks for a selfie as a gesture in return. But things don't go as planned and a misunderstanding leads to their feud becoming prime time news, while public has a field day with their juicy fight. I have somehow always enjoyed watching actors portray superstars onscreen; it's kind of watching a film within a film, so double the fun at the cost of one. And this is seemingly becoming a tried and tested formula for filmmakers. Remember when Om Kapoor, played by Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Shanti Om, became everyone's favourite, or when Vidya Balan brought to life the superstardom of Silk Smitha or even Kangana Ranaut's portrayal of Jayalalithaa during her best days as a superst...

Selfiee Movie Review: Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi film rides on performances and comic first half

What works? Selfiee rides on an extremely entertaining first half, that establishes the conflict with the use of quirky one-liners and fast paced narrative. Director Raj Mehta along with writer, Risshabh Sharma adapt the original film primarily by tweaking the dialogues, as the narrative and plot points follow the same route. The director succeeds in establishing the character of Emraan Hashmi as a passionate fan and hence, the idea of him being hurt by the actions of his favourite superstar also leaves an impact. The self-depreciating humour around Akshay Kumar’s character is hilarious – and ones who know the traits of Khiladi over the years, will react to it even better. The character of Abhimanyu Singh, who plays the role of a contemporary to Vijay Kumar in the Hindi Film Industry, is a riot. He brings out a laughter at every appearance, and keeps the entertainment quotient intact. The media trail portions too work in the initial hour of the film, before slipping into the “yeh toh too much hogaya zone” in the second half. What doesn’t work? While the first half of Selfiee is an entertaining affair, the humour dries down in the second half as the story switches it’s base to drama. The conflict of Selfiee (much like Driving License) is too small to be woven into a 2 and a half hour long feature film. This results in the second half being dragged with some prolonged confrontations between the two leads. The sequence of driving license test does nothing but adds on to the r...
