Explore the flora at Chennai’s agri

Explore the flora at Chennai’s agri-horticultural society, now taken over by the Tamil Nadu government With the Agri-Horticultural Society losing possession of its wonderfully green land on Cathedral Road, we take a look at the rich flora and bits of history the society leaves behind. Its subsequent connection with Semmozhi Poonga will now foster richer variety of plant species June 14, 2023 04:10 pm | Updated 04:10 pm IST The recently reclaimed Agri-Horticultural Society (AHS) on Cathedral Road is a treasure trove for plant taxonomists, floristic officers and scholars of natural history. The hope of access henceforth for academic purposes to this unexplored haven is good news. As a botanist, my understanding of the history of AHS and the contribution of its founding members made me visit AHS with the hope of sighting the plants that were recorded in The Handbook of Trees, Shrubs and Herbaceous Plants growing in the Madras Agri-Horticultural Society’s Garden by Hugh Cleghorn (1853), edited by Robert Brown (1862) and updated by JJ Wood (1866). Dr Robert Wight, the founding member of AHS came to Madras as Assistant Surgeon, but was appointed as Naturalist to Madras Presidency in 1826 by Sir Thomas Munro...

Semmozhi Poonga announcement shuts door on zoo development project in Coimbatore

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s announcement that the State government would fund the construction of a Semmozhi Poonga at the Coimbatore Central Prison ground has effectively stalled the plans to shift the Coimbatore Corporation VOC Park Zoo there. At a function held in the city on Monday, Mr. Stalin said that at ₹ 200 crore the State government would develop the Poonga that would include a meeting hall, open auditorium among others and improve amenities in Gandhipuram after shifting out the Coimbatore Central Prison. The Semmozhi Poonga was a project that was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in 2010 on the eve of the State Government conducting the World Classical Tamil Conference in the city. After the change of government in 2011, the AIADMK government did not take up the Semmozhi Poonga project. This led the Coimbatore Corporation to pursue alternative proposal like developing the VOC Park Zoo. The Corporation came up with a proposal to develop the zoo on 30 acre, after taking 20 acre from the Prison administration (Home Department). The Corporation said it had 10 acre on hand and by adding 20 acre prison land it could develop the zoo, which would be in line with the rules of the Central Zoo Authority and enable it house more animals. It had also prepared a funding proposal for the project saying it would utilise ₹ 20 crore from the Smart Cities Mission project. Later, it changed the funding pattern to say that it would approach the Central and State...

Semmozhi Poonga (Chennai (Madras))

Worst Place for visitors. There is no proper response from anyone who is working there especially Chettan in ticket counter. He is very roude to public and he doesn't know how to behave others. They will not allow you to take a water bottle also inside but the same time lots of people took bags inside illegally with permission of gate entry. already i have been complaint to respective department. There is no proper cleaning in the rest room as well. Totally waste of money and time. 😡😡😡 Senmozhi Poonga is one of the biggest parks in Chennai constructed recently. It is usually a lovers spot and you can find a lot of couples spending time alone chatting and having lunches. College students find this place to be a get together place and it is a calm and nature surrounded place in the busiest city. Such beautiful green planting in the middle of noisy polluting traffic it a welcoming vision from our hotel, we thought we’d walk there but let me warn you you take your life in your hands with the speeding traffic as the pavements are blocked off in most parts and when you see the park there is no indication where the entrance is ! Inside it is beautifully laid out with large healthy plants, getting around using a wheelchair is quite tricky as the paving is not laid well, lunch was good in the food area and very inexpensive. This is a place that’s very popular with photographers so be prepared to be told to get out of the way ! Some people don’t know please and thank you ... There w...
