Shameik Moore on 'Spider

This interview contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. What is it about "That's why I love this movie, because it's about how we wear that mask," Shameik Moore—who voices Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse—tells me over Zoom, just before the film's debut last Thursday. "It really depends on what you find important... These are people that have saved multiple lives, and will continue to save multiple lives. Someone could say they're crazy. It's just how they wear their mask." Fittingly, Moore's words feel like a more nuanced take on the famous quote from ol' Uncle Ben himself—who uttered with his dying breath, "with great power, comes great responsibility." While many radioactive, spider-bitten characters become heroes, it's what you do after donning the mask that determines how you interpret Uncle Ben's wisdom. In Miles's case, his uncle left him with three words: "Just keep going." Morales's journey resonates with Moore, 28, who still sees a lot of himself in the 15-year-old superhero. "I got the role because [of] my heart and Miles's heart—there's so many parallels," he says. "The essence of Miles, which is really the spirit and the drive, is reflective of my own."
