Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic (South Zone), R Sakthivelsaid,“Around 6,000 cases have been filed in the city till October 29.2,300 cases have paid the fine.We don’t insist for immediate payment to public because this is a new revised rule, so we are making awareness on it first. Chennai traffic police wants public to obey the traffic rules. We don’t want to charge them unnecessarily. We want them to obey the rules.”

Tamil Nadu: Cops collect Rs 15 lakh fine from traffic violators in a day

CHENNAI: Police on Wednesday registered 2,500 cases against people for flouting traffic rules in the state and slapped a fine of 15 lakh on them. Police collected the new fine amount from the violators. As per the instructions of DGP C Sylendra Babu, police personnel conducted vehicle checks at strategic locations. All over the state, they set up about 6,000 vehicle checkpoints roping in the law-and-order police along with their traffic counterparts. At every checkpoint, at least three policemen and two-armed reserve men apart from home guard personnel were posted to stop erring vehicles and slap fines on them. In a few locations, traffic police personnel were wearing bodycams. The government has brought in new traffic rules and introduced revised traffic fines, effective from Wednesday. Fine amounts for some violations have even tripled to curb deaths due to road accidents. Police can slap 5,000 on those riding / driving without a valid driver's licence. For the similar offence, the earlier amount was 2,500. Also, one has to pay 1,000 for jumping signals, which was 500 earlier. Using mobile while driving can attract a fine of 1,000 for first-time offenders and 10,000 for repeat offences. Obstructing ambulances, fire trucks, and other government emergency vehicles can attract a fine of 10,000, and rash driving can now cost a person 1,000 from an earlier amount of 400. If the offender commits the same offence a second time, he/she will have to pay 10,000.
