But books featuring kids and teens of color are still rare, representing fewer than ten percent of traditionally published stories. Which sucks, because every teen wants to see themselves as the hero, the one who saves the day, steals […] We are firm believers that books are better than movies, but that definitely doesn’t mean that we don’t get excited for movie adaptations of some of our favorites. We definitely recommend that you read it before you see it, so as we look for...

The Summer I Turned Pretty

Now an Original Series on Prime Video! Belly has an unforgettable summer in this stunning start to the Summer I Turned Pretty series from the New York Times bestselling author of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Jenny Han. Some summers are just destined to be pretty. Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer—they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along. Excerpt Chapter One chapter one We’d been driving for about seven thousand years. Or at least that’s how it felt. My brother, Steven, drove slower than our Granna. I sat next to him in the passenger seat with my feet up on the dashboard. Meanwhile, my mother was passed out in the backseat. Even when she slept, she looked alert, like at any second she could wake up and direct traffic. “Go faster,” I urged Steven, poking him in the shoulder. “Let’s pass that kid on the bike.” Steven shrugged me off. “Never touch the driver,” he said. “And take your dirty feet off my dashboard.” I wiggled my toes back and forth. They looked pretty clean...

Jana Obrist’s review of The Summer I Turned Pretty

So I already watched the series of the book. I mean by that the first season and the book is a lot different, I mean the plot is created a lot different. At the beginning it seems similar but then it evolves differently. I think its one of those unique cases were I would say that the series is actually better than the book. I loved the series, the vibe, the characters, the soundtrack, it was just perfect and it made so much more sense. Also Belly was much more likeable in the series than in the book and the whole scenario with her Conrad and Jeremiah was much more intense in the series. It felt like the book was just too short and I'm the last person who says that. SO much just missed. The whole dab ball thing was so fun in the series. It was like nothing really happened in the book, but not in the good way. Also Taylor was definetely better in the series, but I already heard that before so it was not really a suprise. I know thats a lot of critique and I think if I didn't watched the series first my review would be different. I still enjoyed to read it and it gives nice summer vibes and is a solid read at the beach. Oh but the whole thing with Susannah was in the series literally SHATTERING and in the book just mid...

In the first book, Belly is more cognizant of what her elders, especially Susannah, want from her. However, as the trilogy progresses, she deals with bigger and more life-altering situations, such as breaking up with Conrad, Susannah's death due to cancer, Jeremiah's betrayal, and ultimately, marrying Conrad. The novels illustrate the progression from child to adult through the experiences that both Belly and the Fisher boys encounter as they grow up. • Independence: This is more greatly emphasized throughout the trilogy as Belly gets older and learns to make decisions on her own, disregarding the opinions of authority figures in her life.
