Teaching: Bread and butter or society’s backbone?

Teaching has and will always be the most noble profession of all, and the greatest act of optimism. It is a delight for someone to be an educator. The entire nation, and the world as a whole, functions because of the education and knowledge gained from schooling. The prime people behind this are the teachers and educators. Not everyone can be a teacher, but only a select few. Each one of us have our favourite teachers, whether from KinderGarten, schools, colleges, universities, etc. What makes a teacher our favourite teacher? A definition of “favourite teacher” will vary from one individual to another. Teachers are the backbone of society, and it is a universal truth that teaching is one such profession that creates all other professions. Who is a teacher? Why does an individual choose to become a teacher? What is their ultimate goal? Are they destined to work in this field for the rest of their lives? Are they the chosen ones? How do they know if they are the chosen ones? What makes one a good teacher? What are the qualities needed to become a teacher? What are the skills required to do the same? Are the said skills inculcated or inborn? What is most important? Qualifications, teaching skills, the ability to impart knowledge or all? Can we answer these questions? Evidently, everyone can come up with answers, and we might even have uniform or varied answers to each question put up. Our opinions on the same questions can be different. A debate on this should be conducted. P...

The Role of Teachers in Society

I was recently asked the question, "W ho are the most important people in the lives of students?" and I immediately knew that the answer was "teachers." But while I answered without hesitation, it got me thinking about the real question: " What is it that makes a teacher a GREAT teacher?" The best way to answer is to reflect on the impact teachers have had on my personal development. In my early days in high school, I was a little lost and under-informed, without any concrete ideas about the future. I had no idea what I wanted to do and what I would do in life - in a word, I felt disoriented. While I can't single out just one person as a positive example, there are many teachers I am grateful to. Teachers I will never forget, who are so positive, sensitive, empathetic, and good people, who inspire me to reflect on the values they uphold. They motivate me to be better at what I do, they encourage me to develop, and they applaud my successes. Their "Bravo Kristijan!" lifts me in the clouds and makes me proud of myself and my accomplishments, and at the same time it gives me a kind of recognition for the work done well. All those teachers have invested in me and still guide and direct me towards achieving my goals, towards acquiring new knowledge and skills. Although sometimes I can get upset or dislike a remark that I received from them, in those moments, I remind myself of all their commitment and investment in our lives. Now that I am in the last year of my high school edu...

Teachers Are the Backbone of Our Community

It is hard to let go of the cultural norms we ingest when we are young, especially those we learn from our environment, as opposed to the ones we are taught. For example, letting go of the teaching that clothing, colors, jewelry or makeup are gendered was an easy task. However, it has been much harder to let go of the idea that appearance is indicative of worth. As a young woman, society is constantly reminding me in various nefarious ways that the more attractive you appear, the more worth you have — the more people will listen, the more people will pay attention, the more value you have. I know this to be false. Appearance is no marker of a person’s worth or character. But, it is difficult to fully let go of. No matter how often I remind myself otherwise, I still find myself giving into the prejudices of outward appearance. I say all this to reinforce the fact that it was difficult, or at least an interesting task for me to relearn the societal preference for clear, soft, supple skin over that of pockmarked, weathered skin. B efore I was born, before I gathered a sense of self, my mother, Loretta, was a teacher. From the moment I found myself within my own brain and began connecting the dots, I knew her as a teacher. But, I also knew that she was different from other teachers. At the elementary school I attended she was relegated to corner spaces in classrooms shared with other teachers. Teachers who taught remedial or after-school programs. She regularly spoke to her st...
