Mahua Moitra: 'The fight in West Bengal is between the BJP and Trinamool Congress'

Mahua Moitra is one of the most well-known national figures from the Trinamool Congress. Known for her outstanding speeches in the Lok Sabha, Mahua Moitra has been a most vocal critic of the policies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the Centre. Apart from being a Member of Parliament, she is also the party president of Nadia district, which has 17 Assembly seats. In this interview to Frontline , Mahua Moitra talks about the electoral battle ahead and the Trinamool’s chances of coming back to power for a third consecutive term. “I truly believe this is a fight of good against evil and that we are fighting a battle for India,” she said. Excerpts: What are the chances of the Trinamool Congress returning to power? We are definitely coming back to power. There is no doubt about that. The BJP at the Centre, with all its money and might and with all its control over the media obviously gets far more hype than what is justly due to them based on their strength on the ground. In Bengal, what we have been able to do on the ground, which the BJP and the national media seem to miss, is the huge development work. Bengal is still an agrarian economy; 70 to 80 per cent of Bengal still lives in villages. Every village and rural area has got an enormous amount of development in the past 10 years. Every single family has got something or the other delivered to them. By something or the other we do not mean lollipops, but the very basic things such as health care and education, particu...

Trinamool Congress appoints MP Mahua Moitra as party's Goa in

By Indrajit Kundu: The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has appointed Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra as the party's state in-charge of Goa. A notification in this regard was issued by TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday. As per the notification, the decision to appoint Krishnanagar MP Mahua Moitra as the party's Goa in-charge was approved by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. Reacting to the development, Moitra wrote on Twitter, "Looking forward to doing my very best. Thank you for the opportunity." Looking forward to doing my very best. Thank you for the opportunity Earlier on Saturday, the TMC named former Goa chief minister Luizinho Faleiro as its candidate for the upcoming bypoll to a Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal. Faleiro joined the Trinamool Congress in September of this year and was later appointed as the party's vice president. The Trinamool Congress has been trying to expand its footprint in Goa and Tripura, both BJP-ruled states, ahead of the Assembly polls next year. On October 5, the TMC released a "chargesheet" against Goa CM Pramod Sawant's handling of the state. This "chargesheet" claimed that Goa was the eighth worst among Indian states in terms of unemployment. It went even further to allege that the state's finances were in such a state that the average citizen could not afford to buy a house in Goa.

Mahua Moitra: Trinamool's firebrand MP who is under fire

Treasury benches said the Trinamool MP was behaving as if she was a member of the Bengal assembly | (file photo) Not one to mince words, Trinamool Congress’ Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra recently waded into a major controversy over Goddess Kali by opining that she sees the deity as a “meat-eating, alcohol-accepting goddess.” Her statement invited widespread condemnation from the Hindutva brigade and believers with multiple FIRs being filed against her across the country. But Moitra has stood unwavered by alleged threats and criticisms, daring the BJP to “bring it on.” “Bring it on BJP! Am a Kali worshipper. I am not afraid of anything. Not your ignoramuses. Not your goons. Not your police. And most certainly not your trolls. Truth doesn’t need back up forces,” she said in a tweet. Also read: On Sunday, she took a dig at BJP’s Bengal unit’s co-in charge, asking him to tell his “masters” to stop commenting on “things they have no clue about” after Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to goddess Kali in his speech during the centenary celebrations of Swami Atmasthananda. “Would advise BJP Troll-In-Charge for Bengal to tell his masters to stop commenting on things they have no clue about. Didi O Didi got them the boot. Now Maa O Maa will get them a foot on their chest,” Moitra tweeted. Who is Mahua Moitra? Mahua Moitra Profile

In June 2019, Mahua Moitra’s spirited speech on the “seven early signs of fascism” had created a sensation. Though MPs from the treasury benches had tried to shout her down, the Trinamool Congress MP, making her debut speech, had kept going for around 10 minutes, finally ending with thumping approval from the Opposition benches and from her own party members. Two years later, an articulation, no less spirited, has landed Moitra in a spot, with FIRs and multiple complaints against her. Moitra’s remarks on July 5, during an interaction at the India Today East Conclave, on Goddess Kali — made in the context of the uproar over objections to Canadian filmmaker Leena Manimekalai’s documentary Kaali — have created a flutter, drawing outrage from the BJP and Hindu groups and disapproval from her party, the Trinamool Congress. The few voices of support, if any, have been largely muted. Growing up, Moitra rarely, if ever, strayed off the beaten path. Born in Assam in a family of tea planters, she studied hard, aced her school exams, secured a scholarship to pursue a degree in mathematics and economics at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, and landed a high-paying job as a banker in New York and London. Newsmakers of the Week | Somewhere along that path, she took a pause — and took a different turn. That moment of reflection had come at her 10th college reunion in 2008, Moitra told a gathering of school students in July 2019. “Do I want to come back at my 20th reunion as another...
