How to See Mahakaleshwar Temple's Bhasm Aarti

What Is the Ash Ritual? The first thing you hear when you tell locals that you’re planning to visit the Mahakaleshwar temple is that you must attend the bhasm aarti. The bhasm aarti is the first ritual conducted everyday at the temple. It's performed to wake the god (Lord Shiva) up, do shringar (anoint and dress him for the day), and carry out the first offering of fire to him (by circulating lamps, incense, and other items). The unique thing about this aarti is the inclusion of bhasm, which is ash from funeral pyres, as one of the offerings. Mahakaleshwar is a name for Lord Shiva and means the god of Time or Death. This may be one of the reasons for the inclusion of the funeral ash. You will be assured that this aarti is something that you shouldn’t miss, and that until fresh ash is not brought in the aarti cannot start. Where to View the Bhasm Aarti The bhasm aarti commences shortly after the jal abhishek ritual. There are four halls outside the temple's inner sanctum from where the aarti can be observed, some of which have been newly constructed to accommodate more devotees. The differences are in their size and location. Allocation is based on availability when booking. Nandi Mandapam is the preferred hall to be in, as it's smaller (fits only 100 people) and closest to the temple's inner sanctum. The larger Ganpati Mandapam is situated beside Nandi Mandapam and is the next best option, with stairs to sit on for an uninterrupted view. It can fit 400 people. Kartikey Man...

Mahakal temple in Ujjain: Why it holds special significance in Hinduism

Prime Minister Narendra Modi After Vishwanath temple in Varanasi and the Kedarnath shrine in Uttarakhand, Mahakal temple is the third ‘jyotirlinga’ site to see a major upliftment exercise. The Rs 800-crore Mahakal corridor is four times the size of the Kashi Vishwanath corridor, which the PM had inaugurated late last year. Puranas say that Lord Shiva pierced the world as an endless pillar of light, called the jyotirlinga. There are 12 jyotirlinga sites in India, considered a manifestation of Shiva. Besides Mahakal, these include Somnath and Nageshwar in Gujarat, Mallikarjuna in Andhra Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in Uttarakhand, Bhimashankar, Triyambakeshwar and Grishneshwar in Maharashtra, Viswanath at Varanasi, Baidyanath in Jharkhand, and Rameshwar in Tamil Nadu. Mahakal is the only jyotirlinga facing the south, while all the other jyotirlingas face east. This is because the direction of death is believed to be the south. In fact, people worship Mahakaleshwar to prevent an untimely death. A local legend says that there once was a king called Chandrasena who ruled Ujjain and was a Shiva devotee. The Lord appeared in his Mahakal form and destroyed his enemies. Upon the request of his devotees, Shiva agreed to reside in the city and become its chief deity. The Mahakal temple finds a mention in several ancient Indian poetic texts. In the early part of the Meghadutam (Purva Megha) composed in the 4th century, Kalidasa gives a description of the Mahakal t...

Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple (Ujjain)

We were four persons all 70+ visiting Ujjain on 26-27 October 2022 for the darshan of Lord Shiva and witness the early morning Bhasmarti. On the evening of 26th we did darshan of the jyotirling. The crowd was tremendous but it was moving. After the evening darshan we saw the new corridor which displays beautiful sculptures and panels of mythological characters and stories from the hindu epics. The work of the "shilpkars" and" murtikars" who have crafted these statues and engravings is marvellous. We had Rs200/ tickets booked earlier so we reached the temple early morning at 3am on 27th. Big que but moving. Being senior citizens the volunteers helped but some push and thrust was required. We took position in the Nandi mandap right in front of the garbhagraha. The shringar of the lord started first with water followed by milk ghee honey etc. Then after cleaning the ling with cloth the decoration started. The two young pandits were master artists and slowly the formed a beautiful face on the ling. Then they put the jwellery and the flowers. Meanwhile several bowls of fruits, sweets etc. were put around the ling as prasad. After the decoration was over a huge sack was put on the ling covering it totally. The drums (nagadas), conches(shanks) and bells were playing. The bhasm aarti started and the main priest spread the bhasm on the sack and around. The bhasm was in a cloth ball (potli) and the whole garbha grah got covered in ash. The chanting and music was loud. It was a treat...
