In most parts of North India, married women worship the Banyan tree (also known as Vat Vriksh), offer water and read the Vrat Katha on this day. In states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, Vat Savitri Vrat is observed on Jyeshtha Amavasya, while women in Maharashtra, Gujarat and other southern Indian states mark this day on Purnima, called Vat Purnima Vrat. On this day, Hindu women observe a fast and pray for their husbands' good health and long life.
