Vijay Sethupathi talks about working with Vetrimaaran in Viduthalai Part 1: Success of our film is proof of audience's maturity

The incredibly talented Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi, who recently made a strong impact on OTT alongside Shahid Kapoor in Farzi, is back on the big screen with another critical and commercial winner. The highly acclaimed Tamil director Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai Part 1 is a haunting, searing and powerful exploration of power and its misuse by the empowered. Vijay says he had to be part of this project. “I wanted to work with Vetrimaaran for the longest time. He believes cinema to be a tool of social comment, just as I do. We clicked from the moment he came to me with this idea.” Viduthalai has been one of Vijay’s most fulfilling films to date. “I don’t believe cinema is only for entertainment, although let me tell you, I love doing out-and-out entertainers and have done my share of them. But at the same time I feel there has to be something more, some idea for the audience to go home with. Films that have something more to offer than entertainment have stayed alive. It happens with songs also. I love some of the songs of Dev Anand and Shammi Kapoor. They are rich with poetry about life.” Luckily for Vijay, Vidhuthalai Part 1 (a second part is on the way) has proved a box office success before coming to the OTT. “We must never take the audience for granted, or presume that they only accept a certain kind of cinema. The success of a film like Vidhuthalai is proof of the audiences’ maturity. It encourages me to do more such films,” says Vijay whose performances in Tamil films l...

Actor Vijay Sethupathi celebrates his birthday today. And on the occasion, we cannot not talk about Super Deluxe, the 2019 anthology in which he performed the role of a trans woman and woke up the country to his talent. For anyone who has seen the film, his character of Manickam aka Shilpa is a big take away. But did you know that when he heard the narration of the script, he was so adamant to play the role that he even agreed to do the part without being paid a single penny? In an old interview with Film Companion, “When he narrated the script, I liked it so much. The way it was written was so awesome,” the actor recalled. He picked a scene that made him want to sign the film as soon as possible. “In one scene, my kid asks me why I was not born as a female. That scene was written so well that I decided that I don’t want to miss this film. I begged him (the director), told him that you don’t need to pay me any money. On first day, I think it took 50-60 takes. Then finally, I realised the female inside me. I got the confidence,” Sethupathi explained. In his career so far, Vijay has managed to choose scripts that has etched his performances...

Endearingly called ‘Makkal Selvan’ (son of the people), Vijay Sethupathi has undoubtedly made an unique mark in the Tamil film industry. Without a film background or a mentor to boast of, the actor has won people’s hearts over the years by delivering some fine performances in films such as Soodhu Kavvum, Pizza, Orange Mittai, and Super Deluxe. But in recent times, his choice of films and the trajectory of his career as a lead actor have been worrisome. Throughout his career as an actor, Vijay Sethupathi never followed the conventional path of Tamil male actors who eventually aspire to become ‘stars’ and refuse to play small or experimental characters. Rather, the actor associated with any film which was unconventional and gave him the scope to exhibit his acting chops. Case in point is his relatively small role in Kadaisi Vivasayi. It is also rare for a male actor to make space for a female lead to plan and execute a murder, which he did for Nayanthara's Kadhambari in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan. Before making his debut as a lead actor in Thenmerku Paruvakaatru (2010), Vijay Sethupathi made blink-and-miss appearances in many films. Not one to be limited to the set definitions of a hero, he followed it up with the role of an antagonist in Sundarapandian where he effortlessly switched from a soft spoken friend of the hero to the hardened villain who hires henchmen to murder the same hero. He then went on to deliver a series of hit films including Pizza, Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaano...

Some risks are worth taking, whether it is playing an antagonist in Master or portraying the role of a trans woman in Super Deluxe, says Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi, who believes in letting his work speak for himself. In a career of 40 to 50 films, Sethupathi has done negative roles in very few movies, including superstar Rajinikanth’s Petta and Master, which features him opposite industry senior, ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay. In Master, Vijay Sethupathi’s revenge-driven gangster uses children of a juvenile correction facility for criminal activities. His business comes under attack when an alcoholic professor (Vijay) is sent to the facility. Sethupathi said he trusted director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s vision for the character that allowed him to explore dark emotions. The Tamil action-thriller was also a wonderful opportunity for him to learn from a “mass hero” like Vijay, the 43-year-old actor added. “Whenever I work with senior actors, I go there like a student because I want to learn. I am never like ‘I have done so many films and I have so much experience’. He (Vijay) has been in the industry for more than 25 years. His fan base is massive and I want to learn from him, from his energy. That’s why I also worked with Rajini sir and Chiranjeevi sir,” Sethupathi told PTI in a Zoom interview.
