Palghar lynching: Dahanu MLA blames police for failing to quell rumours, assure villagers

The victims were travelling in a van. (Express Photo by Deepak Joshi) Dahanu MLA Vinod Nikole has claimed that the police’s failure to assure tribal communities in remote villages of its presence and quell rumours about organ harvesters and child kidnappers eventually led to the lynching of three men last Thursday. Nikole of the CPI (M) said that these rumours have been rife in villages in his constituency for the past fortnight. “Villagers have not been sleeping at night fearing that outsiders will rob their homes or kidnap their children to harvest their kidneys. There have been no such instances but residents of many villages are so scared that they have been patrolling their villages every night to spot suspicious passersby,” he said. Nikole accused the police of not doing enough to dispel the rumours. “Had the police made their presence known in these villages at night, villagers would have been convinced that they had nothing to fear,” he claimed. Nikole further alleged that the Palghar district police’s outreach following several attacks on passing vehicles last week had not been successful. Two days before two sadhus and their driver were lynched at Gadchinchle village, the police had managed to rescue two doctors and their driver from a mob of 200-250 people at Sarni Patilpada village 60 kilometres away. The occupants of the car and the police party, both escaped heavy stone pelting without sustaining serious injuries. Nikole said that the source of the rumours is...

CPI(M) MLA Vinod Nikole meets Maharashtra Governor to oppose eco

A delegation of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) led by CPI(M) MLA Vinod Nikole met the Governor and opposed the eco-sensitive zones. The Union government in August declared Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary in Pune district and Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary in Thane district as eco-sensitive zones. The Union government’s move came to preserve the wildlife corridors. However, the Adivasi communities have objected to the notification by the central government. Therefore, the AIKS delegation insisted upon the stringent and speedy implementation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA). In this meeting, the CPI(M) MLA also raised the issue of the thoroughly “false and baseless” charges made by The Governor had to assure the delegation that no action would be taken against Yechury and others. Among those in the AIKS delegation were Natha Shingade, Vishwanath Nigale, Ashok Pekari, Somnath Nirmal, Raju Ghode and Kiran Lohakare. The Truth About the Palghar Lynching

Last week, on the night of April 16, a shocking case of mob lynching took place in Gadchinchle village of Dahanu tehsil in the Palghar district of Maharashtra, around 150 Km from Mumbai. This incident must be strongly condemned and strict punishment meted out to those proved guilty. What were the facts of the case? Why did it occur? And what is its political fallout? What exactly happened? Two sadhus with their driver were going by car from Mumbai to Surat to attend a funeral. Their names were Mahant Kalpavruksha Giri (70), Sushilgiri Maharaj (35) and Naresh Yelgade. They apparently did not have a lockdown travel pass. To avoid the police who would have stopped them, they did not go by the Mumbai-Ahmedabad national highway and took a detour by a small road in the remote rural areas of Dahanu tehsil which goes to Gujarat via the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagarhaveli. It must be remembered that this is an extremely backward and entirely Adivasi (tribal) area. They passed Gadchinchle village, were briefly stopped by the forest guard, but when they reached the Maharashtra border 1 Km away, the guards at Dadra and Nagarhaveli refused them permission to go ahead and turned them back. They came back by the same route and were again stopped at the forest check post. Then the trouble began. The time was around 9 pm and the episode that followed went on for two hours. A crowd of 400 people gathered and started accusing the sadhus of being robbers and child lifters. A small police...

‘Masterminds behind Dabholkar, Lankesh murder, still not arrested’

Vinod Nikole, a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) member of legislative assembly (MLA) from Dahanu, on Saturday questioned the central bureau of investigation (CBI) team’s interest in probing the Sushant Singh Rajput case. HT Image “Why the CBI is so keen on probing the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput when the killers of social activists Dr Narendra Dabholkar, labour activist Govind Pansare, Kannada writer Prof MM Kalburgi and journalist Gauri Lankesh are roaming free,” Nikole said. “We do not oppose the CBI probe in the death of the actor, but the same alacrity by the CBI is missing in the murders of the above four activists,” said Nikole. The CBI has till now not arrested the mastermind behind Dabholkar’s murder, and till date, no charge sheet has been filed in all the four cases, he said. Nikole also claimed that the CBI was taken up with the actor’s death probe only because the Bihar elections are due in a few months.

Maharashtra: Farmers call off long march to Mumbai after govt assures support

Mumbai: Protesting farmers and tribals, who were on their way to Mumbai from Nashik district of Maharashtra, called off their long march on Saturday with their demands being taken into consideration in the state legislature and ground-level officials receiving orders to execute the government's orders, a CPI(M) MLA said. The march had started from Dindori town, located around 195 km away from Mumbai, on March 12 demanding relief of Rs 600 per quintal to onion growers hit by price crash, 12-hour uninterrupted power supply to farmers, and waiver of farm loans. They had reached Thane district's Vasind town, around 80 km from Mumbai. On Friday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde told the Assembly that onion cultivators will be given a financial relief of Rs 350 a quintal and appealed to them to call off the protest. "Our demands have been met. All the demands by the farmers were taken into consideration in the state legislature and collectors and tehsildars have been issued orders. We received calls from our activists that work (implementation of the government order) has begun. So we have decided to call off the march," Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA Vinod Nikole said. He said the participants have started heading back to their homes, and the remaining people will leave by Saturday evening or Sunday. Meanwhile, a 58-year-old participant in the long march died on Friday. The deceased Pundalik Ambo Jadhav was a resident of a village near Dindori in Nashik. "After having dinne...
