Ponniyin Selvan

If you have watched the trailer of Ponniyin Selvan-I then you know the film is a theatrical experience. After almost every ten minutes, the viewer is hurled into a new world, with new characters, and storylines that merge and flow into each other. The layered and incredibly heavy storyline might be confusing for many, particularly those not familiar with the magnificent Chola kingdom, its kings, the dynasty wars, and the smaller kingdoms and chieftains around it. Not surprisingly, the film has become the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of the year 2022 and the fifth-highest-grossing Tamil film of all time. Aditha, for his part, is in a manic rush to wage endless wars, spurred on by a bloodbath after his father refused his relationship with Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) and when he later saw Nandini in love with an injured King Veerapandiyan during one of the wars. He refuses to go back to Thanjavur because he knows Nandini is present there. Meanwhile, there’s a conspiracy to bring both the brothers back to Thanjavur so that all the rumour...

Filmmaker Considered one of the longest recorded dynasties in world history, Cholas were at their peak during the ninth and tenth centuries and remained in power till the 13th century. Their kingdom spanned the entire area south of the Tungabhadra River; they annexed Sri Lanka during Rajaraja’s reign while his son Rajendra defeated the Pala king at Patliputra. The Chola king, Rajendra, also used the sea routes to invade foreign countries and expanded Tamil merchant associations. Before Ponniyin Selvan 2, a look at the who’s who of the Chola kingdom

• • • • Before Ponniyin Selvan 2, a look at the who's who of the Chola kingdom Before Ponniyin Selvan 2, a look at the who’s who of the Chola kingdom Many characters were introduced in a short span in Ponniyin Selvan 1, which made the film a bit of an information overload for many. So, here's a list of characters inhabiting the Chola kingdom which will keep you prepared for the second part. Both Karthi and Vikram, two of the many leading stars of Mani Ratnam’s two-part Ponniyin Selvan film, recently admitted that the first part of the franchise was hard to follow for people in the North as there were too many characters introduced in a short span of time. Vikram said that it was difficult for him to remember the characters as well, and so he could relate to the problems of non-Tamil speakers. In a way, it is true that there was an information overload for people who are not aware of the work of Kalki Krishnamurthy. Hence, before the release of PS 2 this Friday, we thought of fixing that problem by listing out the characters of Ponniyin Selvan and providing a brief intro about them. Here it goes: Jayam Ravi as Arulmozhi Varman Vikram as Aditya Karikalan. Unlike his younger brother, Karikalan is impulsive...

In 1941, he launched a weekly magazine, also called Kalki. It was in this magazine that he published the story of Ponniyin Selvan (‘Beloved son of Ponniyin’), chapter by chapter, from 29th October 1950 to 16th May 1954.
