Sara Ali Khan: 'In many ways, I am glad my parents were not together'

Photograph: Kind courtesy Sara Ali Khan/Instagram Sara Ali Khan was born to be a star. Or so she thinks. She was a star in her head from childhood. I first saw Sara when she was 9 or 10 at the Screen awards where I had accompanied Sanjay Leela Bhansali. That evening, Black swept the awards. We were all in a celebratory mood. In the middle of all this, a chubby girl walked up to Sanjay, did an Umrao Jaan adaab and left. "Who is that girl?" I asked Sanjay. "That's Saif ( Ali Khan) and Amrita Singh's daughter. She's already behaving like a star." Years later when I recounted this incident to Sara, she replied, "This sounds very much like me. I am what I am. I guess it comes from being honest, and that's the only way I can be. Let those who can lie convincingly do it. I can't! I start fumbling the minute I lie. Staying true to myself suits me just fine." Photograph: Kind courtesy Sara Ali Khan/Instagram When I first interviewed Sara, she struck me as clever and confident. When I asked if she thought she deserved to be one of the most talked about newcomers, Sara shot back: "80 percent of it, I deserve. The other 20 percent I don't know where it comes from. It's making me feel very grateful and emotional." She did not attend any acting school; she was educated at Columbia University in New York. Sara Ali Khan on her bond with father Saif: ‘We discuss Hitler and Stalin more than films’

Sara Ali Khan recently opened up about her journey in Bollywood, and how her learning truly started when she signed her first film. The 25-year-old is the granddaughter of Sharmila Tagore, and daughter of actors Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan. She said she may have grown up around actors but she learnt the tricks of craft only when she was on her film’s set. Earlier, for her, acting meant dancing on “Kaanta laga” or just being Poo. In a recent interview to Elle India magazine, Sara Ali Khan shared that being on her first film Kedarnath’s set helped her realise the true meaning of acting. “I think that’s when I truly realised what acting meant. The hard work, the dedication, all of it,” she said. Khan further told the magazine about her idea of ‘acting’ while growing up. “People would expect that I’d know things –being a star kid and coming from a filmi background. But on each set, I’ve learnt new things. When I was a four-year-old acting only meant dancing on Kaanta Laga and when I was a teenager, I wanted to be Poo from Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… On the sets of Kedarnath, I didn’t even know that sometimes one shot has to be taken several times.” And it’s thus not surprising that it’s not just films that connect the Simmba actor to her father “I remember this vacation with him in Italy, which was all about pizza, pasta, culture, museums, music and plays. This is something my father and I really, really enjoy. We both are history nerds, and we laugh about the fact that we di...

Sara Ali Khan reacts to dad Saif Ali Khan’s ‘not an absentee father’ comment: ‘He was always there without even living with us’

Right from the start, she has been quite an open book – vis-à-vis her professional as well as personal sphere. In fact, since her debut film itself, Sara Ali Khan poses with Saif Ali Khan. A few days back, Saif spoke – in an interview -- about not being an “absentee father.” He said: “I may not have been responsible at various times while in my 20s, but I’ve always been there and ready to do the best that I can do at that time for my kids (Sara and her younger brother, Ibrahim). I have never felt like an absentee father.” Ask Sara about Saif’s statement and she says: “I know my father very well. Dad is like me, so he says what he is thinking at that particular point. He never really says things for any ulterior motive.” At the same time, the Kedarnath actor wastes no time in calling him a “great father.” “I love mother a lot. I think when you have a lot of time to show a feeling or emotion, it’s easier. Mum is a single mother and I am everything because of her but she has every day to show how much she loves me. I don’t live with my father so, I haven’t felt that [emotion from his side],” she says. Sara further adds: “The only thing that I know about dad is that he has always been a great father. He has always been there without even living with us. So, I think he deserves a special hug and love from me for never making me feel that he doesn’t live with me because he was, and is always just a phone call away. And that’s really comforting.” Also read: Work-wise, after Love ...

Actor Sara Ali Khan, who was last seen in Gaslight has recently opened up about her equation with her parents Amrita Singh and father In a recent interview with News18, Sara shared, “Visualising life without mom to any degree is what scares me the most. Most often the one thing that I can definitely rely on is that mom is the reason to wake up. On most days, that’s it, that’s the reason. I can’t not have that.” Sara, when asked if her father has given her any tips on acting, she opened up on how he’s told her to always read her own scripts and then decide whether she wants to do a particular film or not. She shared, “My father doesn’t read my scripts or help me pick them. He has told me, ‘As an actor, if you’re reading a script and feel at the end of it that you want to do it, then do it.’ Kisi aur ko padha ke kya hi milega (what will you get by making others read your script)! Other people have their own convictions and guts but I’ve my own.” Sara will be next be seen in Laxman Utekar’s untitled film with Vicky Kaushal. The actor is now shooting Homi Adajania’s Mubarak, which is a murder mystery, with Karisma Kapoor.
