(i) The northern plains receive rains from the Bay of Bengal branch of the S.W. monsoons. (ii) It strikes the Myanmar’s Arkan mountains and gets deflected westward along the Himalayas. (iii) Maximum precipitation is recorded in the north-eastern part of India and West Bengal. (iv) As the monsoon moves westwards, they gradually lose moisture and rainfall decreases from east to west over the northern plains. (v)The clouds are almost exhausted by the time they reach western Rajasthan.

Monsoon wind is divided into two branches which brings moister and cause rain-fall across the Indian sub-continent. First south-west branch exhausted its most of the moisture(coming from Arabian Sea) raining over western ghat. When its one branch reaches to western part of north India, it is left with little moisture. Second branch of monsoon from south-east brings moister from the bay of Bangal and its one branch causes rain in north-east and other moves towards west. The westward flowing monsoon wind causes rain in northern plan. As it moves towards north-west it gets deficient of the moisture, so rainfall decreases from east to west in north India. As soon as they move toward Himalayas they take western turn and move up the Ganga valley, but due its westward approach it become drier and drier resulting in lesser rainfall North West India. The shrinking moisture levels results in decrease in rainfall from east to the west.
