Zwigato Movie Review: Kapil Sharma's heartbreaking story of survival roots from Nandita Das' dig on the gig economy

Zwigato Movie Review: Kapil Sharma's heartbreaking story of survival roots from Nandita Das' dig on the gig economy Zwigato Movie Review: Written by Nandita Das and Samir Patil, the Kapil Sharma and Shahana Goswami starrer focuses on an omnipresent character who is an intrinsic part of our lives but never gets noticed. Zwigato Movie Review Photo:FILE IMAGE • Movie Name: Zwigato • Critics Rating: 3.5 / 5 • Release Date: March 17, 2023 • Director: Nandita Das • Genre: Drama Zwigato Movie Review: We all get things delivered to our homes every now and then. Sometimes we interact with the delivery boys, and other times we ignore them. We hardly acknowledge how long and how hard they work in order to earn a small incentive which largely depends on our ratings of them. Nandita Das' Bollywood movie Zwigato brings to focus the same world where survival is conditioned not on the hard work of the character but on the frivolous nature of the customers. Set in Bhubaneshwar, the story revolves around Manas played by Kapil Sharma, and his wife Pratima (Shahana Goswami) and how they keep their body and soul together to pull through the financial crisis. Showing the plight of the migrant couple in the post-Covid era, the film is Nandita Das' thoughtful take on the gig economy. While the movie title Zwigato appears to be a dig on food delivery giants - Zomato and Swiggy; the film is much more than that. Written by Nandita and Samir Patil, the film focuses on an omnipresent character who is ...

Zwigato movie review: Terrific Kapil Sharma, Shahana Goswami bring forth the dark side of India’s success story

Premium Zwigato movie review: Terrific Kapil Sharma, Shahana Goswami bring forth the dark side of India’s success story Zwigato movie review: Nandita Das' third directorial is such a powerful mirror to today’s India, which has always grappled with staggering disparities between the haves and have-nots. And that’s why Countless Indians like Manas (Kapil Sharma) and his wife Pratima (Shahana Goswami) live with those anxieties on a daily basis. Will Manas be able to make the requisite number of deliveries to be able to get the requisite number of stars? How do you best an ‘app’ which controls your every waking moment, and where you can be downgraded to zero at the whims and fancies of those you deliver to? The fact that a gig worker can do the downgrading himself (of said customer) is no consolation for Manas, who tells a flint-eyed female Zwigato superior (Sayani Gupta): ‘Aap partner-partner karte hain, par paisa toh aap hi banaate hain’ (you call us partners, but you are the ones who make the money)’. Also Read | Other truth bombs are strewn through the film, which does sometimes find itself being weighed under the series of bald statements, but which never feels less than real. A ‘delivery partner’ called Aslam doesn’t dare to go into a temple, because he is scared: ‘mujhe darr lagta hai’, he tells Manas. A political activist’s (Swanand Kirkire) protest meeting where he speaks of the brazen entitlement of the rich and powerful is drowned out by loudspeakers as the police s...

Zwigato movie review: Kapil Sharma adds soul to this compelling tale

Cast: Kapil Sharma, Shahana Goswami Kapil Sharma stars in a compelling tale in Zwigato. Director: Nandita Das Let’s just stop saying ‘such films are made for, meant for and fit for film festivals’. At first, Director Set in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, Zwigato follows the life of Manas (Kapil Sharma), an ex-factory floor manager who had to sit at home jobless for eight-months because of pandemic-induced unemployment. Being the only breadwinner in the family of five — his wife Pratime (Shahana Goswami), children Kartik (Prajwal Sahoo) and Purbi (Yuvika Brahma) and a bed-ridden ailing mother, Maai (Shantilata Padhy), Manas ends up signing up as a partner with a food delivery app called Zwigato - a cheeky blend of popular food delivery apps Zomato and Swiggy). He then manoeuvres his way to understand the tricks of the trade, trying to crack the complicated rating system, hoping to achieve daily delivery target, encountering difficult customers and sometimes, requesting for a selfie with them to earn that extra incentive. I quite liked that instead of focusing on the plight and ordeal of these families who are reeling from the aftermaths of the pandemic, Zwigato prefers to highlight how life has to continue against all odds. A stern take on India’s gig economy, the film often turns into a social commentary with slight references to political scenario and system flaws that service class has to deal with, but it never takes the preachy zone. A short and impactful monologue by Sayani Gup...

Zwigato Review: Delivers a critical message but at a plodding pace

Zwigato Story: Manas loses his job as a floor manager at a factory and takes up a gig as a delivery guy for a food delivery app. The movie follows his everyday life, which is replete with ratings, penalties, and running behind incentives. Things go awry in his otherwise warm family life when his wife Pratima decides to join a mall as the cleaning staff. Zwigato Review: Food delivery people have become integral to our lives. We may rate and tip them, but how much do we know about what goes on behind the scenes as we wait for our food to arrive? Director and co-writer Nandita Das offers an insight into that through Manas Mahto (Kapil Sharma). But that’s also a means to talk about the trials and tribulations a certain class of society (labour class) faces due to inadequate employment opportunities. The film takes the viewer through Manas’s daily hustle as his wife, Pratima (Shahana Goswami), seeks employment to support the family financially, despite his disapproval. We soon discover facets such as app companies dangling the carrot called ‘incentives,’ which takes the drivers down the rabbit hole of making maximum deliveries daily and how they are exploited at various levels. As Manas laments, ' Woh majboor hai, is liye mazdoor hai,' (He's a labourer because he's helpless) correcting a placard slogan that says, ' Woh mazdoor hai, is liye majboor hai' (He's helpless because he's a labourer). The movie also sensitively touches upon the class and gender discrimination deeply emb...
