Amrish Puri, Bollywood’s 'Mogambo' who was more than just an iconic villain

On his 14th death anniversary, ThePrint takes a look at the career of Amrish Puri, whose exceptional range spanned both parallel and mainstream cinema. Amrish Puri was India’s most loved villain on celluloid, with acknowledgment even from Hollywood, but the actor was bigger than just an archetype he’s usually remembered as. Unlike many actors of his time, Puri ventured into the film industry only in his early forties but had a long, versatile career in both theatre and Bollywood. Traversing the different terrains of parallel cinema and mainstream cinema in the ’70s through the ’90s, Puri did it all – the loud and the subtle, the great and the low-brow and the conventional. On his 14th death anniversary, ThePrint takes a look at the life of the actor whose range spanned all genres and performance styles. Early career Puri was born on 22 June, 1932, in Jalandhar to a middle-class family. Two of Puri’s brothers — Chaman Puri and Madanlal Puri — were actors too, established much before he made his debut. Madanlal, especially, was well-regarded with several memorable negative characters to his name. Puri was also the first cousin of singer and actor Kundan Lal Saigal. Hoping to make it in Bollywood, just like his brothers, Puri came to Bombay (now Mumbai) in the early 1950s. However, he failed a screen test for a film. This didn’t deter him from starting his career on the stage. Puri worked for years in Mumbai’s theatre industry before getting a break in wha...

Hail Mogambo! All about late Amrish Puri's journey in Bollywood

For Amrish Puri it was virtually the ‘Summer of 42’. The actor’s long simmering affair with acting found culmination when he reached his early 40s. And while his dream of playing the hero may have been thwarted, he went on to become the most loved villains of all time. He was also an artiste who redefined the dynamics for character actors. If he wowed the critics with his rough-edged portrayals in the art films of Shyam Benegal and Govind Nihalani, he won over the masala movie buffs with his louder-than-life histrionics. Puri with his reverberating baritone, piercing glance and dramatised dialogue delivery was a formidable figure against the hero. His costumes were all about prolific imagination and his oneliners ranging from, ‘Mogambo khush hua’ to ‘Dong kabhi wrong nahin hota’ are now part of cinema glossary. Puri even went ahead and worked in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and Richard Attenborough’s Gandhi, only to return and endorse the diversity that is Bollywood. But behind the tough facade was a genteel person. “Upright and a true karmayogi,” as son and marine navigator Rajeev Puri describes him. “People from all walks of life loved him – even the police and the politicians.” Rajeev adds, “A decade after his demise, some film or the other of his is constantly playing on channels – out of the 350 he did, 200 were hits!” And when people till date come up to him requesting for a photograph because he’s the famed Mogambo’s (Puri's character in M...

Amrish Puri Was Such A Nice Man To Know

“What a gentleman…and such a nice man to know,” writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar summed up the general dismay in the film industry over the sudden passing away of one of Bollywood’s most revered and in-demand character actors. He was not just a brilliant actor, but also a wonderful person.” Kamal Haasan had this to say when Amrish Puri died on January 12. 2005 “Puri Saab was my leading man in Chachi 420. I masqueraded as a woman and he was the man who had the hots for me. Puri Saab was as usual, flawless. Since `Chachi` we kept in touch constantly. A true gentleman-actor.” One of three brothers, Amrish’s elder brothers Chaman and Madan Puri were actors long before Amrish. At age 40 a career as an actor came belatedly to Amrish. His first screen appearance was in Sunil Dutt’s Reshma Aur Shera in 1971 where he made his debut alongside Amitabh Bachchan. Coincidentally they are regarded as two of the best voices ever heard in Hindi cinema. And it couldn’t be mere chance that a fortnight before his death Puri’s baritone provided the voiceover in Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyon which starred Amitabh Bachchan. Puri first made audiences and critics sit up and take notice in Shayam Benegal’s Nishant in 1975 where he played an immoral zamindar. Success in avant-garde cinema was instant, though the same cannot be said about mainstream cinema. “Those weren’t easy years for me,” the actor with the booming baritone said to me once. “Recognition was hard to come by, and I had a family to s...

Amrish Puri, an actor of formidable resources

With Amrish Puri’s death on January 12, 2005 an entire era of screen villainy came to an end. Not since Pran did we have a villain so menacing and intimidating. Like Pran, His last wish before ending an conversation with this writer was, “Are you recording our conversation? May I request you to erase my voice after you finish transcribing my interview? I don’t want my voice to fall into the wrong hands.” Not sure of what Puri saab meant, but one complied. Who wanted Mogambo to be na-khush after all?
