DFW Becomes Largest Airport in the World to Achieve Carbon Neutral Status

"Our initial goal was to reduce our CO2 emissions per passenger by 15 percent by 2020. We were able to achieve this goal two years ahead of schedule, and as such we've been able to drive more efficient operations, offset the impact of our growth and reduce our emissions per passenger," Robert Horton, vice president of Environmental Affairs for DFW told TravelPulse. "DFW has a strong commitment to sustainability, and we will continue to look for innovative ways to reduce our emissions while improving the customer experience." Facility officials say their focus on conducting business in a way that balances environmental considerations with the day-to-day operations of the global super hub have resulted in numerous additional achievements as well: "We recognize that environmental improvement is an economic, social and business imperative for the airport and for the community we serve," said Horton. "Sustainability touches everyone, and we look at our sustainability goals not just as expectations we need to meet, but an important responsibility. Topics From This Article to Explore

SAN is Carbon Neutral

San Diego International Airport (SAN) is now a carbon neutral airport! On September 18 th SAN became the second airport in North America, and the first airport in California, to receive carbon neutral accreditation from the global agency that establishes carbon standards for airports worldwide. SAN is certified at "Level 3+"--the highest level through International's Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. This means that we reduce our carbon emissions under our direct control, engage with airlines and other business partners to reduce their onsite emissions, and offset the remaining carbon emissions under our control. What does it mean to offset remaining carbon? It means balancing out the environmental impact of our operations by investing in programs and projects that remove or prevent carbon in the atmosphere. Doing so ensures our carbon neutrality status. To accomplish this endeavor we use The Airport Authority was recognized for this accomplishment at a ceremony at the ACI-NA Conference in Tampa. "This year marks an important milestone in our efforts to promote sustainability and strengthen our commitment to the environment," said Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) President and CEO Kevin M. Burke. "We congratulate San Diego International Airport on achieving carbon neutral status. Airports like San Diego International Airport are leading efforts in our industry to lower our carbon footprint through the Airport Carbon Accreditation program. ACI...

DFW Awarded $35M for New Zero Carbon Utility Plant

ecup DFW AIRPORT, Texas – Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is pleased to announce that it was awarded a $35 million grant from the FAA and Department of Transportation to build a new zero carbon central utility plant. The grant is part of a $1 billion bipartisan infrastructure law to fund improvements to airports across the U.S. DFW is the largest in the world and the first carbon-neutral airport in the U.S.As part of reaching the Airport’s goal of achieving Net Zero by 2030, DFW plans to construct a new Zero Carbon Electric Central Utility Plant and replace its aging steam piping distribution system with a highly efficient hot water piping system. This addresses current and future heating and cooling demand; improves resiliency and maximizes efficiency. The Airport is grateful to be awarded this grant by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation. “The $35M grant was awarded specifically for this project. “The implementation of this new Zero Carbon Electric Central Utility Plant is a key component to the Airport reaching its 2030 goal of achieving net zero carbon,” said Robert Horton, vice president environmental affairs at DFW Airport. DFW Airport earned the new 4+ level in ACI’s global Airport Carbon Accreditation program. DFW was recognized as the first carbon neutral airport in North America in 2016. The ACI announcement came just weeks after DFW Airport received international recognition as the first airport to earnaUnited Nations Global Climate Action Award on Oct. 27, 2020. “These recognitions are the latest examples of DFW Airport’s commitment to serving our community and our world with a comprehensive, holistic approach to sustainability,” said Sean Donohue, CEO of DFW Airport. “We continue to look for innovative and meaningful ways to reduce the Airport’s carbon footprint with mindful, responsible practices and processes. We can and will do more, thanks to the focus and hard work of everyone at DFW Airport.” As part of the ACA program, airports commit to reducing their emissions by making investments in heating and lighting efficiency technology, electric, hybrid or gas-powered vehicles, public transport incentive schemesand stakeholder engagement to encourage further emissions reductions. Airports applying to become accredited must have their carbon footprints independently verified. As one of four org...

First U.S. Airport Achieves Carbon Neutral Status

Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport has become the first airport in North America to achieve carbon neutral status after the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) Program upgraded DFW Airport to “Level 3+ Neutrality,” the highest level of environmental achievement available to airports. DFW is one of only 23 airports worldwide to achieve the milestone distinction. Carbon neutral program takes flight The recognition is the culmination of nearly two decades of sustainability efforts by DFW Airport to reduce its emissions and carbon footprint. Carbon neutrality occurs when the net carbon dioxide emissions over an entire year is zero, meaning the airport absorbs or offsets the same amount of carbon dioxide as it produces. The achievement is rec...

Four new airports given carbon neutral accreditation

NEW KID: Brussels Airport hosted the assembly Four new airports have been given ACI EUROPE also issued an update on the progress it has been making in addressing its CO 2 emissions, through the independent and voluntary global certification programme, Airport Carbon Accreditation. Reaching carbon neutrality under airport carbon accreditation means that an airport has reduced the emissions under its direct control (Scope 1 & 2) as much as possible and has offset the remaining emissions. “These airports welcome over 65 per cent of European air passenger traffic. From June 2017 to May 2018, accredited airports in Europe succeeded in collectively reducing the CO 2 emissions under their direct control by 163,277 tonnes of CO 2– a reduction of 7.6 per cent.” The latest European airports to become carbon neutral at the dedicated airport carbon accreditation ceremony during this year’s assembly in Brussels were: • • • • Niclas Svenningsen, who heads the Climate Neutral Now initiative at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat in Bonn, Germany said: “It is heartening to see the momentum of Europe’s airport industry towards delivering on their pledge to have 100 carbon neutral airports in Europe by 2030. “With the addition of Brussels, London Stansted, Rome Ciampino and Treviso today, they are now a third of the way there – all through voluntary action by airport operators. “At the UNFCCC, we regularly underline that genuine progress on climate...
