‘The Kerala Story’ movie review: Adah Sharma’s performance marred by half

‘The Kerala Story’ movie review: Adah Sharma’s performance marred by half-truths and an emotionally exploitative gaze The premise of ‘The Kerala Story’ demands attention and emotional investment, but director Sudipto Sen’s treatment is guided more by local politics than cinematic sagacity May 05, 2023 02:39 pm | Updated 09:42 pm IST The radicalisation and trafficking of gullible girls to germinate terror is a story waiting to be told. But the way director Sudipto Sen tells The Kerala Story, after years of research, is more burlesque than a sincere depiction of the problem. More like a companion piece to The Kashmir Files, the film maintains a divisive tone and the gaze is emotionally exploitative. Like the bigots in the film, it seems the makers are keen on converting the audience into hate mongers and expressing themselves in society. Said to be based on real stories of how innocent non-Muslim girls are recruited for the Islamic State, it follows three nursing students in Kerala who are brainwashed by an extremist group into thinking that their gods are no good and that only Islam can be the guiding light. Lured by love and lopsided logic, the girls are trapped in a heinous game where they become fodder in a purported clash of civilisations. No stay on screening of The Kerala Story: Kerala High Court Shalini or Fatima Ba ( While the premise demands attention and emotional investment, the treatment gets increasingly guided more by local politics than cinematic sagacity. Where Are The Kerala Story Culprits Now? Are They Alive Or Dead?

In a country where secularism isn’t just a word but a way of conduct, things have been slipping out of hand too hard and fast. Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen, hardly needs any introduction. The steaming controversies are enough to point out that this emotion-laden, terrorist-centred Indian film is trending these days. In fact, you’d be surprised to know Kerala Story has become the fifth highest-grossing It highlights the journey of four women–Shalini (Adah Sharma), Gitanjali (Siddhi Idnani) and Nimah (Yogita Bihani, who are brainwashed by their classmate, Asifa (Sonia Balani). We have been discussing their stories and know how they were targeted by some Muslim men in the name of love jihad. Love jihad is a broad term used by Indians to demonstrate the manipulation of a Hindu woman by a Muslim man in the name of love. While the victims need to come out of hiding, the culprits should be exposed as well. Where Are The Kerala Story Culprits Now? The jury regarding Sudipto’s claim regarding Kerala Story being inspired by the true story of 32000 non-Muslim women is still out. His claims keep fluctuating, the numbers aren’t steady either. For all of its controversial glory, some facts cannot be denied. Kerala Story is centred mainly around a Hindu aspiring nurse, Shalini Unnikrishnan. She was impregnated by a Muslim man and brainwashed to embrace Islam as her religion. This man then took advantage of her naivete and circumstances to recruit Shalini to the Islamic State of ...

The Kerala Story Review: Harrowing And Horrifying Stories That You Wish Weren't True

A film review, in many ways, is a perspective. If one were to be honest, it is history that will judge a film best particularly with respect to the intentions of a filmmaker and the veracity of their claims. In the case of Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s production The Kerala Story, it has been in the news for a while now. While the makers have consistently defended their work, the only way to judge this film was by watching it. Starring Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Sonia Bilani and Siddhi Idnani, the film is two hours long and is more or less engaging throughout. Director Sudipto Sen does not waste any time in getting to the point. Rather than following a linear narrative, Sen skillfully chooses to go back and forth in time, this way, he succeeds in gaining his viewer’s unflinching attention. In one moment you are in the midst of Kerala’s lush greenery and the very next, you are transported to barren nauseating terrains stretching out into oblivion. It is hard to write a review without delving into the sensitive aspects of what the film aims to say. There are four women at the helm. Of them, two are Hindus, one a practicing Christian and one Muslim. Adah Sharma as Shalini makes the most of this opportunity as a gullible college student who turns into an indoctrinated victim. Her transformation from Shalini to Fatima sees her undergo a massive adulterated change yet she retains a bit of her innocence throughout. After a string of unsuccessful attempts at garnering the attention of th...

• • • • The Kerala Story movie review: A poorly-made, poorly-acted rant The Kerala Story movie review: A poorly-made, poorly-acted rant The Kerala Story movie review: When a film shines a light on different aspects of an issue, it creates space for reflection and conversation, and you come away with food for thought. What about a film which does exactly the opposite? ‘The Kerala Story’ comes riding on a raging controversy. The filmmakers, director Sudipto Sen and creative producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah, insist that their film is based on the In the past week, this figure of ‘32,000’ which was mentioned in the film’s trailer, has been reduced to 3. This changes everything: the makers have practically admitted that their initial figure was highly exaggerated, and to extrapolate its sweeping claim from such a miniscule figure is nothing but gross misrepresentation. The film itself is nothing but a poorly-made, poorly-acted rant which is not interested in interrogating the social complexities of Kerala, an India state proud of its multi-religious, multi-ethnic identity. All it is intent upon is creating the most simplistic, paper-thin characters to tell us that Kerala is in danger because its innocent, naïve Hindu and Christian girls are being swayed by evil Muslim men, and radicalised to the point of no return. Explained | Bright-eyed Shalini Unnikrishnan (Adah Sharma) fetches up at a nursing college in Kasargod. Of her three roommates, one is Hindu, the other is Christian, and...

The Kerala Story (2023) Movie Review

A controversial story backed by strong performances India is a secular state that inhibits millions of people from many different religions. While the majority of the country’s population follows Hinduism, 20.2% of India’s population includes people of all different religions including Islam, Christianity, Sikhism and more. Religious clashes are something that naturally occur in India from time to time and there is a boatload of movies inspired by such true events. The Kerala Story is reportedly one such movie backed by the Hindu religious sentiment that touches on topics of religious indoctrination, political ideology, Islamophobia, ISIS recruitment and more. The 2023 movie follows the story of three young nursing school female students, Shalini Unnikrishnan, Geetanjali Menon and Nimah Menon who get trapped by a group of people. The devious organization tries to drive these young girls away from their own religion and indoctrinates them with beliefs of their own. One of the three women, Shalini (also known as Begum Fatima) is then trafficked to Afghanistan where she is used as a sex worker. The Kerala Story tells the story of these three women and, in particular, Shalini’s attempt to escape the Afghani base camp. The movie allegedly presents the true story of these three victims who are real people, ending with testimonies from Geetanjali’s parents and Nimah Mathew who narrate their experience after they were brainwashed and manipulated by members of this organization.
