Roller Derby Timeline

1935 Sports promoter, LEO SELTZER, looking for attractions to fill the Chicago Coliseum, created the TRANSCONTINENTAL ROLLER DERBY, an endurance race featuring a team of one man and one woman, roller skating on a banked track in a mythical race from one coast to the other. The game was modeled after dance marathons and bike races, popular in the 30s. Seltzer's sport debuted at the Coliseum on August 13, 1935. Using women in his game was a double-edged sword for Seltzer since he knew the presence of women athletes would sell tickets, although the mainstream press would not consider his sport legitimate or worthy of their coverage. 1935-1937 The next race (after the premier in Chicago) was in Kansas City, starting Sept. 18, 1935. Major cities that hosted Transcontinental Roller Derby included Louisville, Cincinnati, Indianapolis & New York City (at the famous Hipprodrome). The biggest stars of the early game were IVY KING, JOHNNIE ROSASCO (Derby's first Hall of Famer - 1952), WES ARONSON, PEGGY O'NEAL, JOE NYGRA & GENE VIZENA (husband & wife and Derby's first 'villains'), plus mother/son team of JOSEPHINE 'Ma' BOGASH & BILLY BOGASH. 'Ma' Bogash was the first woman inducted into the HOF (1952) with Rosasco. Billy became one of the greatest stars in the history of the game, skating till the late 50s. February, 1937 In Salem, Illinois, on a bus trip from St. Louis to the next race in Cincinnati, a bus crash claimed the lives of over forty Derby skaters and personnel, almost des...

Roller Speed Skating: Olympic history, rules, latest updates and upcoming events for the Paris 2024 sport

Roller speed skating events are usually held on outdoor — and occasionally indoor — rinks with banked walls or on closed road circuits. A maximum of five wheels are allowed on the inline skates athletes wear, and wheels cannot exceed diameters of 110mm. For marathons only, skates can have 125mm diameter wheels. No brakes are allowed. The constant jostling for a favourable position combined with the mass start, velodrome-like walls and 200m track make for thrilling competitions often decided by photo finishes. The first Roller Speed Skating World Championship was held in Monza, Italy, in 1937. The following year, London hosted the 1938 Track Roller Speed Skating World Championship. At the Olympic Summer Games Barcelona 1992, rink hockey, played on quad skates, was a demonstration sport. It marked the first time athletes on roller skates competed on the Olympic stage. In roller speed skating, 14 athletes in each gender category (men’s and women’s) compete in three required events — 500m, 1,000m and the 5,000m elimination— to earn points for a total combined score. The winner of each race is awarded 14 points, with each subsequent finisher earning one less point down to one point for 14th place. The final rankings are decided by the total number of points each skater accumulates over the three events. Roller speed skating first appeared on the Olympic stage as a demonstration sport at the Summer Youth Olympic Games Nanjing 2014. After it was well received in China, it made it...

Mumbai's first banked skating

In A city where space is always an issue, the news came as a breath of fresh air. Somaiya Sports Academy, an initiative of Somaiya Vidyavihar has launched Mumbai’s first banked skating and cycling track at its Sion campus. Used for roller derby events, a banked track is an oval skating surface designed with raised and sloped turns. As the pitch of the banked turns increases, the skater’s speed potential increases too. ADVERTISEMENT Built from an investment of over Rs 25 lakhs, the skating bank follows specifications that fall in line with national tournament requirements, which is 200 metres inner oval and approximately 240 metres square on the outer perimetre. The width of the track is 7 metres, of which 6.5 metres is usable. “It was shocking to learn that Mumbai, despite having thousands of young skating enthusiasts, did not have a skating track. So, we took it up as one of our initial initiatives,” says Samir Somaiya, president, Somaiya Vidyavihar. The track can be used by skating enthusiasts from across Mumbai. The academy will offer coaching for beginners, intermediate and advanced skaters as well as competitive training. “We believe that there is an urgent need in Mumbai for creating accessible spaces for sports, both from the perspective of competitive training and for inculcating the habit of sports,” says Kedar Tembe, sports director, Somaiya Sports Academy. “It is a facility to conduct intensive coaching programmes, organise competitions or just let people in the...
