'Special' Jaiswal: From Homeless To IPL Hero

REFILES to fix typo in 12th par He once lived in tents and sold street food to pursue his cricketing dream. Now, sizzling talent Yashasvi Jaiswal is the toast of the Indian Premier League. On Sunday the Indian 21-year-old smashed 124 off 62 balls for Rajasthan Royals in front of a huge crowd in Mumbai, the city he moved to as a child from a poor family in Uttar Pradesh. "What a story, what a special talent. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a superstar in the making," former Australia batsman and ex-IPL coach Tom Moody tweeted. "He has got real talent. The kind of domestic season he has had, he has taken that form into IPL. Good for him, good for Indian cricket and good for RR as well," India's all-format captain Rohit Sharma said. The left-hander's maiden IPL century was not only the highest score of the current season -- it also put him on top in the league's 2023 batting rankings. With a strike rate of 159.70, he has now racked up 428 runs, ahead of South Africa's on-fire Faf du Plessis (422 - Royal Challengers Bangalore) and New Zealand opener Devon Conway (414 - Chennai Super Kings). Jaiswal moved to Mumbai -- without his parents -- when he was just 11. "I used to sleep in a dairy and then stayed at my uncle's place but it wasn't big enough and he asked me to find a different place," Jaiswal told AFP in an interview in 2020. "I then started to stay in a tent near Azad Maidan (a Mumbai sports ground) and would play cricket there during the day. Yashasvi Jaiswal used to sell street f...

Jaiswal, Mukesh in Tests; Rinku, Jitesh in T20Is: India Set To Begin Transistion From WI Series: Reports

India could usher in a new era of transition following their struggles at the 2023 World Test Championship final. India's next series against the West Indies could see plenty of new players get a call-up in both Tests and T20Is. India's focus will be on 50-over cricket with the Asia Cup and World Cup coming up. Following the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final debacle, India are set for a rare one-month break, which comes at the perfect time as it will give the all-format players time to refresh their batteries ahead of a gruelling season that will see them play the Asia Cup and the 2023 Cricket World Cup. However, India face a tough fight to get to the summit clash away as they have a hard schedule that will see them play a home series against England and play away to both South Africa and Australia. Hence, the India team will have to be at their best to reach the summit clash This will mean India needs to shape a squad that is in peak form over the next two years and, hence, embrace a transition with most members of the current team in their mid-30s. Elsewhere, the same report adds that the T20I team has already started to phase out senior players following the 2022 T20 World Cup, and that is set to continue in the West Indies. Hardik Pandya is expected to lead the team in the shortest format as preparations continue for the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the likes of Jaiswal,

The 21-year-old, who moved to Mumbai as a child and lived in a tent to pursue his cricketing dreams, hit 26 runs in the first over off Kolkata captain Nitish Rama. The left-hander only missed out on a century because Rajasthan chased down the modest target of 150 with a massive 41 balls to spare, with Jaiswal unbeaten on 98 with 12 fours and five sixes off 47. "I prepare well and trust myself to execute my shots. I know the results will come. I wanted to finish the game and winning the game was my motto," the player of the match said afterwards. "I was only thinking about the net run rate (for Rajasthan) and not my century," he said. The only hiccup was Jos Buttler being run out for a duck in the second over, but Rajasthan captain Sanju Samson (48 not out) joined Jaiswal to see the visitors home in the 14th over. Jaiswal's astonishing innings was also the second fastest in T20 history after India's Yuvraj Singh clubbed a half century off only 12 balls against England at the 2007 World Cup in South Africa. Jaiswal won a place in the Mumbai state team in 2019 and became the youngest batsman, at 17 years and 292 days, to score a domestic one-day double century. The left-hander's big break came when he was snapped up by Rajasthan Royals for $338,000 in the 2019 auction of the world's richest T...

IPL 2023

But you can't blame Rana for bowling that over; you can only praise Jaiswal. The batter came down the track first ball and hit it for a six, and followed it up with another next ball. In all the years of IPL cricket, only once had that been done before - Virat Kohli in 2019 against Varun Aaron in a five-over match - and even after the 12 runs off the first two balls, Jaiswal was only whetting his appetite. Three of the next four balls in the over went for boundaries, the fourth ball very nearly did too. Those six balls showed such pristine form that even Buttler did not hesitate to sacrifice his wicket next over. On zero, Buttler had turned down Jaiswal for a single but the youngster hadn't spotted it and had run through. Once Buttler noticed that, he made the split-second decision to cross Jaiswal so that Jaiswal would not be out. "Between Jos bhai and me, I am learning a lot. Today, he sacrificed his wicket because of my error, and I really respect that. We all know that it happens in the game, nobody does it purposely. But that was the moment where I decided to take responsibility, thinking 'it is okay' but I need to take responsibility from here on." He first hit Shardul by moving leg side and driving an inswinger, then by pulling through midwicket and finally following it up with another drive through the covers. On 49 off 12 balls, Jaiswal had very nearly broken the all-time record for the fastest T20 fifty. On the next delivery, he shaved one ball off the IPL record...
