Karnataka govt. extends 50% rebate window for pending traffic fines by 15 days

Karnataka govt. extends 50% rebate window for pending traffic fines by 15 days This follows the success of such a rebate window to clear nearly 42 lakh traffic violation backlog cases and mop up over ₹121 crore in Bengaluru alone during a nine-day window from February 3 to 11 March 03, 2023 08:40 pm | Updated 09:32 pm IST - Bengaluru Karnataka government has provided another 15-day window with a 50% rebate for penalties on traffic violation cases. The rebate will apply again from March 4, Saturday. This follows the success of such a rebate window to clear nearly 42 lakh traffic violation backlog cases and mop up over ₹121 crore in Bengaluru alone during a nine-day window from February 3 to 11. The rebate window was initiated acting on an advice by the Chairman, Karnataka Legal Services Authority to clear backlog cases and garnered a huge response. This prompted Bengaluru Traffic Police to write to the State government and Karnataka Legal Services Authority appealing to them to extend the rebate window. However, the window closed before a decision was taken on February 11. The Transport Department issued an order on Friday providing another 15 days rebate window starting from March 4. The order stipulates that this rebate will be applicable only to cases booked before February 11 and not later. Motorists can check for cases pending against them in the Bengaluru Traffic Police website and pay the fines online on Karnataka One, digital payments portal Paytm and at all traffic...

Will Karnataka lap up the 50% discount on traffic violation fines?

Bengaluru traffic police collected over ₹8 crore on Saturday (till the time of going to press) in pending traffic violation fines, after some violators availed the 50 per cent discount by police. Traffic violators across Karnataka owe the traffic police department around ₹530 crore in penalty fees, of which ₹500 crore is due from Bengaluru itself. These e-challans constitute more than two crore notices pending for close to eight years now. Bengaluru traffic police may not have bargained for the online traffic that the announcement brought. “The traffic is now brutal, online and offline,” says Giridhar Chandrashekar, UI/UX designer. Others like Khyber Jagannath, entrepreneur, feels that the app should be rectified so people are able to pay seamlessly. “It is a good attempt to clear dues. However, if it becomes a routine then it beats the whole idea of a fine for a violation,” says Lavanya Srinivas, a teacher. Bengaluru reacts 'I was fined for an offence I did not commit’ I have a pending challan for `500, for signal jumping. I’m 100 per cent sure I didn’t jump the signal because traffic moves very slowly there. Not sure why I would pay a penalty I didn’t commit. –– Akhilesh Bhat, program manager ‘Seems like Cops want to generate revenue’ One citizen feels this is a tactic, and some fines are not genuine. “There are four fines in my name, and only one is genuine… I would like clarity. I feel since there is a pause on drunken driving and towing vehicles, this is a strategy fo...
