J. Luke Wood, Ph.D. is the Vice President for Student Affairs & Campus Diversity and Chief Diversity Officer at San Diego State University (SDSU). Wood is also the Dean’s Distinguished Professor of Education and a tenured full Professor in the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation and Postsecondary Education (ARPE) at SDSU. According to the Black in the Crimson in Black, Wood is the first and only Distinguished Professor of Black/African American descent in SDSU’s history. In 2023, Wood was appointed by the state Senate to serve on the newly established California Racial Equity Commission. He joined SDSU in 2011 and is an active researcher and equity-driven leader. In his capacity as Vice President, Wood oversees a Division of nearly 500 professional staff and 2,000 student staff designed to provide co-curricular experiences to students and advance equity and inclusion for students, faculty, and staff at SDSU. Wood leads an operating budget of $46 million with 55 departments in Student Affairs (e.g., Student Health, Counseling, Residence Halls, Student Life, Financial Aid, Cultural Centers, Fraternity and Sorority Life) and Campus Diversity (e.g., faculty and staff professional learning, Employee Resource Groups, faculty inclusion-hiring, general advising). New Sacramento State president J. Luke Wood shares his vision

Jonathan Luke Wood envisioned he would become the president of Sacramento State dating back to when he was a student on campus over 20 years ago en route to pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Black history and politics. The university announced they appointed Wood as the next president of the college campus in May, stepping into his new role beginning July 16. Following the retirement of his predecessor Robert Nelsen, Wood will return to his alma mater to become the institution’s ninth president, and second Black president. Following his educational journey at Sacramento State, Wood got into Arizona State University where he pursued a second master’s degree, but this time in curriculum and instruction in early childhood education. He went on to earn his doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies. Much of Wood’s work is focused on equity in education for students of color, specifically Black students. Wood has authored 16 books and published research focusing on racial inequality issues in education, including co-authoring a survey with the Wood was born in Oakland and was raised in Siskiyou County. He lived in a town that had a population of about 1,600 people, where1.5% were Black. Wood recalled his high school graduating class consisting of 100 seniors at the time. Louis Bryant III, OBSERVER Whatever challenges and obstacles faced by many of Sacramento State’s 31,000 students – more than 13,000 of them Black and Latino – there’s a good chance incoming President Dr. Jonathan Luke Wood has been there. Wood was named the university’s ninth president — and the second African American — May 24 and begins his tenure July 16. He has a distinguished career in education equity and brings a diverse personal background to the position. What Is Racelighting?

Key points • Racelighting is distinguished from gaslighting when the messages used to invalidate the victim are racial. • Racelighting reinforces stereotypes that People of Color have lower capabilities, are morally destitute, and worth less. • Passive racelighting often occurs through implicit bias and microaggressions that shape the experiences of People of Color. Tatiana is a recently hired administrative assistant at a law firm. She has always been a strong writer, is highly organized, and is dependable. At first, most members of the firm seem very welcoming and excited to have more help with the intense workload. However, one lawyer named Charles is unwelcoming to Tatiana. During their first encounter, he makes a remark about there being other “more qualified candidates,” insinuating Tatiana only received the job because she is a Black woman. He points out that she is the only person of color in the firm, which is true. Tatiana later learns Charles’s close friend applied and did not get the position. As more time passes, Charles’s negative comments to Tatiana increase. Whenever she writes letters and memos, he harshly criticizes her writing. Her Charles is often disorganized and misplaces papers.
