Manasa Varanasi: "Miss India gave me the chance to drive social change on a large scale"

'Look for the beauty in others to find the beauty in yourself' — that's precisely what makes our queen, Manasa Varanasi, beautiful inside out. Winning the prestigious national pageant, Femina Miss India 2020, meant much more to her than the sparkling crown and the beautiful gown. Manasa, who was an academic brilliance, set out on the path to reach out to as many kids as possible to set them free from misery. "My social mission revolves around children, and the reason for the same is, even before Miss India, I used to volunteer with an NGO called 'Make a Difference.' Being there with the children gave me a lot of clarity in my own life; of course, I had my job, friends, and family, everything revolves around me, but with the children, I was able to see the world from a very different perspective because I was interacting with people whose realities were very different from mine," she asserted. Every weekend, Manasa would walk down to the shelter home in her neighborhood and teach subjects like math and English to the kids at the NGO, and that was indeed a life-changing experience. She aspired to do something more significant to help kids across our country who are abused, but she was still to find the right path, and that's when she decided to participate in pageants. An emotional welcome for Manasa Varanasi as she returns home after two weeks as VLCC Femina Miss India World 2020

After a 5-KMs-long bike rally by the biking group Hyderabad United Bikers led her home, Manasa was ready to indulge in some homemade food, lovingly prepared by her ammama (maternal grandmother). “When I was away from home, the thing I missed the most was her khaana. So the second I landed in Hyderabad, all I wanted to do was to give her a hug and eat lots of homemade food,” she told Hyderabad Times. But before that there was some naach, gaana and revelry to welcome her home. Her sister Meghana and friends accompanied her home to the sound of dhol and showered her with rose petals. Manasa’s ammama Annapurna was equally excited to meet her granddaughter, cooking up her favourites and overseeing the floral and balloon arrangements being made at home. “I made everything she liked to eat growing up,” she says, shyly. Manasa’s parents Shailaja and Ravi Shankar too can’t stop beaming with pride about their child’s win. “I am so proud of her,” says her father emotionally, as her mom adds, “We’re an academically inclined family, and no one has ever ventured out to pageants. This is new to us.” Growing up, Manasa would always be found with her nose buried in a book, says her mom Shailaja. “But she was also fond of dancing and singing. I guess, all this inculcated discipline in her and helped her win this pageant. It’s an emotional moment for me as she returns home, not just because she won, but because I’m not used to being away from her,” she says.
