Mason Alexander Park, Desire of Netflix's Sandman, endlessly grateful

AP As "The Sandman" finally made his way to the screen thanks to Netflix, Mason Alexander Park needed to be Desire. Based on the landmark comic book series written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, "The Sandman" is a grand dark fantasy concerning Dream, a supernatural being who's part of a family of embodiment of universal concepts known as the Endless (his siblings include Death, Despair, Destiny, etc.), each in charge of their own metaphysical realm. After more than a century imprisoned on Earth, it's up to Dream to set things right in his world and ours. Across the first season of "The Sandman," now streaming on Netflix, one of Dream's more mysterious and potentially dangerous siblings is Desire, the captivating personification of all one might want. Introduced in the pages of the series' tenth issue in 1989, Desire was a revelation to Park. "I had always clung onto Desire as a character that I saw myself in, whether that was aesthetically — I hope not in terms of when it comes to the morality of the character," Park said. Park, who is nonbinary, became aware of "The Sandman" when they were collecting comic books with their father at a young age. "It’s kind of like when you see ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ for the first time," Park said. "I feel like there are very specific nonbinary or gender non-conforming characters in media that people latch onto because the representation is so limited. And so Desire was, for me, the first time that I h...

The Sandman actor explains how Desire is motivated by protecting Despair

"There's something about that kind of sibling dynamic, messing with someone just for the fun of it, that roots the character and the storytelling in such a youthful, childlike state. It really just feels like the ultimate form of dress-up," Park says. "It feels like I'm putting on catsuits and messing with my older brother. That is everything I could've ever wanted when I was younger." Park says that they first encountered The Sandman in their youth as part of their shared comic-collecting habit with their father, and learned even more about Desire specifically as part of a research project into non-binary characters in literature. They heard about the adaptation when they were deep into production on Netflix's recent Cowboy Bebop show, and filled the hours of their New Zealand quarantine protocols by reading The Sandman comics from start to finish and listening to "Desire can easily be interpreted in a myriad of ways, both positive and negative, which is true of the emotion and the need that they represent," Park says. "That's what stands out to me the most, because when I talk to certain people about the character, they think Desire's the big bad villain of the story. But when I first talked to Neil about the character, he had nothing but incredible things to say: 'Desire is awesome, Desire is amazing, Desire saves the universe in the end.' He told me that Desire is the hero of Desire's own story, and The Sandman could very easily be told from Desire's perspective and De...
