Monica O My Darling review: Tries too hard to impress

A neo-noir, crime comedy thriller that also doubles up as a murder mystery, Monica O My Darling isn't your usual Bollywood commercial potboiler. Or at least that's what you'd like to believe until you actually sit through and watch this 2-hour-10-minutes long film and realise that it's so Bollywoodised that you just can't get over the plot twists and predictability of events, which make this Vasan Bala directorial a fun yet average watch. Average because the moment it was revealed at the film's teaser launch that Andhadhun director Sriram Raghavan was to helm the film but Bala took over after five years, one expected a similar experience. Unfortunately, despite having Raghavan's flavour throughout, Monica O My Darling doesn't even come close to Andhadhun's magic. Monica, O My Darling Review: A Rollicking Ride Through the Movies

Director: Vasan Bala Writer: Yogesh Chandekar Cast: Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi, Radhika Apte, Zayn Marie Khan, Akansha Ranjan Kapoor, Sukant Goel, Sikandar Kher The running time of Monica, O My Darling is a little over two hours, but it took me three hours to complete the new Netflix thriller. There were no loo breaks or domestic distractions involved; on the contrary, my eyes never left the screen. The truth is my old VHS-tape habits emerged: I spent a majority of the film pausing and replaying moments. Not because I was scanning a colourful murder mystery for carefully planted clues – it had nothing to do with the plot. It had nothing to do with the countless Easter Eggs and retro hat-tips either. The reasons are purely sensory. It’s just…fun to watch. It has something to do with – to quote director Andrew Dominik – the “musicality of film”. This musicality was once inherent to the beats of a Bollywood potboiler, but it’s a forgotten art in modern Hindi cinema. Several scenes in Monica, O My Darling, like any great song, reclaim the harmony of timing and tone. A dance move here. A turn of phrase there. A slow-mo entry shot here. An erotically clumsy scuffle there. They simply summon a feeling, a finger-snapping rhythm that’s difficult to resist. The movie comes at us from this space, where narrative style doubles up as visceral substance. That’s the thing about director Vasan Bala. His cinephilia – which shaped Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2018) and even the screenplay of Bo...

Monica O My Darling movie review: Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi serve a fun watch

Premium Monica O My Darling movie review: Rajkummar Rao, Huma Qureshi serve a fun watch Monica O My Darling movie review: Rajkummar Rao is reliably solid, Sikandar Kher livens things up, and Radhika Apte has so much fun as the female version of the standard quirky cop that you wish she had more to do. Also Read | Director Vasan Bala’s penchant for whackiness (‘Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota’) is evident right from the beginning. A gruesome killing is served as an aperitif, even before we’ve properly settled down. And for the main course, we get misbegotten lust, femme fatales who sway to the one of the most famous cabaret numbers in Hindi cinema (Piya Tu Ab Toh Aaja), and a killer whose biggest achilles heel is his vanity. The proceedings remind you a bit of twisty James Hadley Chase novels. All characters are immoral or plain crooked. And so of course, there’s a flash of ‘Johnny Gaddar’, Sriram Raghavan’s terrific thriller about a heist gone wrong. You can see traces of other well-known films: the director and writer Yogesh Chandekar are clearly Bollywood fanboys, but when they put their paws on an immortal scene from ‘Maqbool’, you want to tell them to back off. Some things can not be improved. And that’s the thing with ‘Monica’. If your USP is being whacked-out, then you have to make sure that nothing slackens. This is even underlined in the film, when one character says to another, ‘dheel nahin dene ka, tight rakhne ka’, or words to that effect. But that ‘dheel’ does occur in...
