• Muharram is the first month of the Islamic New Year. • The Battle of Karbala took place in 690 CE. • In India, Ashura will be observed on August 9 this year. New Delhi: Muharram, the first month of the Islamic New Year, is observed with extreme grief and mourning. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain – the son of Hazrat Ali and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (praise be upon him – PBUH) – in the Battle of Karbala. While Imam Hussain was mercilessly beheaded by the Umayyad Caliph Yazid I on the 10th Muharram, the day is also called Ashura. Muslims observe this day every year since the Battle of Karbala (a city in Iraq) took place in 690 CE. In India, Ashura will be observed on August 9 this year. Imam Hussain’s (RA) brother, Imam Hasan (RA), who was a peacemaker, relented by handing over his power to Muawiyah through a peace treaty. While the terms of the Hasan-Muawiyah treaty were that Iimam Hasan would become Caliph after Muawiyah, if anything happens to Hasan, then the leadership will be taken over by Imam Hasan’s little brother, Imam Hussain (RA). But Muawiyah breaches the treaty. Hasan (RA) died after being poisoned by his wife, Jada bint ...

The specific mention of these four months does not mean that other Islamic months have no sanctity; in fact, each Islamic month has its own sacredness and we all know that Ramadan is admittedly the most sanctified month in the year. But Allah Almighty has chosen a particular time for His special blessings and these four months are among those particular times in which a Muslim can get the maximum of Allah’s blessings.
