Retaliatory strike by village guards leaves nine dead in Manipur

Nine Meitei men were killed and 10 injured in Khamenlok, a Kuki village in Imphal East district of An official said the killing was likely in retaliation for the torching of houses by Meitei groups in Kuki villages over the past three days. Editorial | The men, who were part of a raiding mob, were likely ambushed by armed Kuki village guards between 10 p.m. and 10.30 p.m. on Tuesday while they were resting on the outskirts of Aigejang village. The dead were part of a mob of nearly 3,000, some carrying sophisticated weapons, who entered Kuki villages in Kangpokpi district over the past three days and destroyed homes, a police source told The Hindu. The source said mobile towers were blown up and roads were blocked by women groups so that reinforcements from district headquarters in Imphal East, around 18 km away, could not reach the site over the past three days, even as the Meitei mob continued the rampage. A police officer said that the situation was tense, and many Meitei men are said to be stuck in the hills. State Shooting Academy ranges in Bhopal. The India international shooter had to get into a shoot-off twice with second placed Udhayveer Sidhu of Punjab, after both had tied with 26-hits in the 40-shot final. Both Bhavesh and Udhayveer got four-hits in the first shoot-off series, before the former shot four yet again in the second series to claim the title, as the Punjab lad managed three. TMC lawmaker Derek O'Brien has filed a complaint with Kolkata's cyber police station over the alleged leak of sensitive data stored in CoWIN portal. The leaked data included Aadhaar and passport numbers. The disclosures had prompted criticism from experts and Opposition leaders, but the government denied a ?direct breach? had taken place. A senior officer from Kolkata police?s detective department said a probe has been started. Two Uzbek women were detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport for attempting to smuggle 16.5kg of gold worth ?8.16 crore ($1.1m) into India from Tashkent. The women were apprehended on the basis of intelligence inputs and the gold was discovered after one of the women abandoned a bag at the customs arrival hall.
